In my last visit in 2012, I have seen the place where Tipu Sultan was shot by the Captain of the British army. It was in front of the entrance of the underground tunnel, by the side of of his palace. His complete palace was flattened by the cannon of the British army. Only the Kali temple on the side of the palace was left over(rebuilt). This time when I visit that place I could not find that place.

I'm reading 'Anarchy' by Dalrymple. I wanted to see the famous fort of Tipu Sultan. Few minutes into the video I decided to see who posted this. Boy am I delightfully surprised to find it's Dave Brody! With all the moats dried up it's hard to see that it was once considered impenetrable. Design and built by French engineers on the latest scientific and military principles this fort provided the most up-to-date defences that the eighteenth century could offer.

A fascinating day trip video into history about Tipu Sultan, that brings to life a bit more a book I'm reading about his life called The Sword of Tipu Sultan, by Bhagwan S. Gidwani, so far a very well written historical, well researched account that is presented as an historical novel the best we can get since there is not the detailed description of those times in any other way it seems. Trips to India also have helped me relate to this subject and the very interesting video I so appreciate.

It was Hyder Ali who first realised the danger from East India company and tried to stitch an alliance with Nizam and Peshwa to stop them. The Nizam was already in the British lap and the Peshwa was undecided. Tipu continued the efforts, the Peshwa vicillated till the end and after the fall of Tipu capitulated to the British. Had atleast the Peshwa allied with Hyder Ali/Tipu Indian history would have been different: the Nizam was anyhow untrustworthy

This is the wrong perception. The fact is that British destroyed most of Tipu's fort and made it into ruins in the space of a few years. You can verify this from old photos in 1800s. They maintained only their property like the dungeon, cemetry and erected the memorial only for British soldiers in 1907. This is a well know psychological warfare that they had mastered across the subcontinent. This pattern is repeated all over India. Archaeological survey of india (ASI) got to maintain this only after 150 years of British neglect. So they could only salvage some part of it with limited funds.

Just by looking at those names on erected monument one can easily guess how shit scared the british were of the sultan....goosebumps how many british regiment soldiers were killed just in sirangapattana alone
