Of course they are. What is wrong in prostrating? You don't loose your equality because of that do you? Choose where you really want equality. E.gThe pay for the same work. The same kind of education and work opportunities. Now that is real equality.

@@radsub007 what you are saying is counterintuutive. You prostrate to people who occupy a position higher than you. If you agree they are equals, prostrating makes no sense. And of course, equality is multidimensional, not singular. The point is the perspective one holds. If in an equal relationship, the guy is put on a pedestal,how do you expect it not to translate into other areas like work, education etc.There too naturally people are biased positively toward the male just like you are here. It's all connected.

In the west the females don't have the custom of prostrating and yet they experience a bias in the pay . It took a long time for them to get females to vote and they still can't accept a female head of state in many countries like the US. Varshini you are free to think the way you want just like I have the freedom. You posed a question I gave a reply. By the way I am educated have an excellent job worked both in India and outside and therefore spoke from a job perspective. That is something to worry about and again only my opinion.

@@radsub007 No, we prostrate to our elders. We prostrate to people who are older than us or who occupy a higher position in the relationship. We prostrate to seek their blessings. Parents don't prostrate to their children, older siblings don't prostrate to their younger siblings. Position however takes precedence over age. For example - a younger brother prostrates to his elder brother's wife even when he is 10 years older to her in age because she is his elder brother's wife and higher up in relationship graph. He seeks her blessings, not vice versa. Hence, if two people are equal in a relationship, it automatically implies that either they don't prostrate to eachother or they both prostrate to each other (like my parents do). Equality is important in all areas. Let's not pick and choose. Work, education etc. are more important than this but this can't be ignored either. In the end however it is to each his/her own. It is between the spouses what kind of equation they agree to establish between them. And lastly, prostraing is an Indian or Eastern concept, sure the US doesn't do it. Work sexism is blatantly visible, here it is more subtle (disguised in the form of culture or tradition). Nevertheless, both are different shades of the same issue.

@@radsub007 Sorry, your argument is flawed. Bride prostrating to groom follows the old-fashioned adage "kal anaalum kanavan; pul anaalum purushan" that has been used to subjugate women. Brides and grooms today are far removed from the outdated traditions that is followed blindly. So long as we stick to these senseless practices (including the bride's parents washing the groom's feet) we negate the relationship between bride and groom that should be based on equality, love, respect and trust. Equality and respect are the roots of a strong relationship. Let us follow those practices that enrich a newlywed's life.
