16:17 As someone who recently moved here (U.S) from DR, and happens to have Dominican trans friends, I felt like sharing my experiences. First, I didn’t know about the “Guevodoces” medical condition or how common it is. Second, regarding James’ point of DR having a more understanding view of trans people is not correct. The Dominican Republic is a VERY religious country and subjects as transsexuality and kids being born intersex is seen as taboo, even satanic depending on who you ask. There are a lot of social stigmas nationwide regarding this topic, however, this can vary depending on the area you’re in or specific families. Granted, I’m only 22 and I no longer live in DR but in my city and in my social circles, “Guevodoces” was not of common knowledge. Edit: Just fixed some typos :D

I believe you are 100% correct. I live in the United States and we are not as open as the media likes to make it seem. It’s like a fringe movement that is represented across nearly every media channel that has all of these countries believing were some utopia for a transgender’s and then when they get here and see that less than 1% of the whole country is trans they’re really disappointing. I can imagine how religious and conservative the D.R. is because I lived in a Hispanic community where everyone was married and took pride in traditional values & I grew up in the south and I didn’t know anybody who didn’t go to church or practice some form of religion.

Dominican here, and i for one had never heard about the guevedoces as apparently it only happens in a very very remote town on the island. I can say that transphobia and things like that are very much still apparent because it’s not as common as the media makes it out to be. It’s only apparent in the village of las Salinas which has a population of about 5k, so basically affects a few hundred people or less which is the reason I never even heard of it even though I lived in the DR for 13 years. Basically I wanted to say it’s not a 250k ppl thing just a very small minority and it doesn’t really affect any transphobia or sentiment like that.

Intersex and being trans are two separate experiences, you can be trans and NOT be intersex. You can be both but that’s not always the case. The kids in DR and other places listed are intersex, but they might not be trans. Also with gender there is a difference with gender IDENTITY, and gender EXPRESSION. Vastly different. Also yes trans women can and do keep their trans ID to themselves out of safety, look up the stats about how often trans women esp Black trans women are the victims of violence when they disclose the fact they’re trans. Also that “forcing down your throat”? What does that mean?? I’m genuinely asking.

In my ignorance (I haven’t been to Europe or England in thirty years) what I have been misled by the media, was y’all didn’t have these issues with the kind of forced narrative in regards to queer rights. I thought y’all were totally through all the social fears and anxieties associated with this issue. But I think the thing that impresses me the most is how y’all so easily draw hard lines that you will not cross. You say X is bad behavior and to stop it and move on. You admit, even if it might mean being ridiculed, that you stand firm on a hill. Good for y’all! I hope you get that $10 million contract with Spotify…….. But if you do……..do I have to get Spotify? Whatever that is?….😂😂😂😂

I had a similar scenario, went to this friends house, I stepped out to answer a phone call about 20 minutes later I come back inside and I even called out to him, when I stepped in his room he was watching porn while touching himself, I sat down to watch the Dahmer series that was on the other screen, he did not stop for a couple minutes. I just sat there trying to ignore him, I could not believe it. You cannot make these things up
