Scuffed translation (I suck at Chinese) 0:01 eddy: a spicy dish, it’s renowned in Singapore... its spicy. / Brett: DURIAN 0:12 hello everyone we are TwoSet Violin, we want to celebrate our 4 million subscribers, so in November we will be performing with the Singapore symphony orchestra 0:22 zaobao has prepared some questions for you, are you ready to answer them? Both: yes 0:28 first question: what is your favourite singaporean dish? Eddy: I like the Laksa here in singapore Brett: mmm Eddy: it’s very good Brett: I [like to] eat Bak Kut Teh. Bak Kut Teh. ( pork rib in broth, peppery) Interviewer: do you eat those foods in Australia? Brett: Australia.. Australia doesn’t have Bak Kut Teh, I’ve never eaten Bak Ku Teh in Australia before. Eddy: Australia has Laksa but the flavour is not quite, it’s not up to par with Singapore’s 0:51 second question: can you speak Singlish? (Singaporean English) Eddy:can lah, cannot, confirm don’t understand [can with emphasis, can not, definitely doesn’t understand]. (Laugh) I don’t know what I’m saying lol Brett: chop (I think he means chope [reserve - a seat -), hahaha thats all I know Eddy: Just like that lor [ it is just this way ] Eddy: when I first came to Singapore I didn’t understand, I thought to myself ‘is this English or not English?’ Brett: now when I’m in Australia and I hear Singlish I’m able to pick out and understand the Singlish parts. Eddy: yes yes yes, we have to learn slowly. 1:17 third question: please name three good things about the viola Eddy: it can compliment the sound of the violin. Brett: it can also compliment the sound of the cello. Eddy: it can also compliment the sound of the double bass. Interviewer: ok just one thing instead Eddy: ok um, honestly speaking, in a quartet, the viola and the second violin’s part is very important. Eddy: When the Composer writes good music oftentimes the middle part is the most interesting. Eddy: first violin is likely the melody whereas the cello is the bass. The middle is like musical accompaniment. Brett: it’s more special, / eddy: yes yes yes 2:03 fourth question: did your Chinese improve? Brett: ah, mine is not good. I can not speak Chinese very well. Eddy: for me, when I speak Chinese my brain gets more tired. I have to think harder. Eddy: I can only recognise when they write ‘beef noodles’ in the menu. Brett: the moment I see Chinese words my head hurts, it hurts before I even read it. 2:27 Interviewer: we have prepared a game for you guys to test how much you’ve improved in Chinese. Are you ready to start? Both: yes, yup, ok, can, Brett: lets do it, / Eddy: 👍👍 First round (paganiniana) Brett: how long do we have? / interviewer: 1 minute Eddy: has it started? / Brett: it started Brett: hmm... violinist Eddy: oh, David Oistrakh Brett: (struggling) violin, violinist, Eddy: is it a guy or a girl? Brett: it’s a guy, he’s Italian. Eddy: Paganini! ( to himself: Italian), alive or dead? Oh Stradivarius! Eddy ( while Brett struggles) : violinist, Italian.. Vivaldi! Brett: hes Italian, and dead. Eddy: fettuccine, spaghetti, Brett: song! Eddy: song.. Paganini violin concerto! Brett: song! Eddy:... four Seasons! Brett: song! (Lol) Times up! Brett: aw that’s so hard 3:45 Second round (Merlion - mermaid+lion - a fictional animal that is a statue and tourist attraction in Singapore ) Eddy: quick quick quick quick Brett: tiger Eddy: tiger mom! Brett: dispenses/spits water Eddy: oh! Merlion! Yeahh lets go 3:57 third round (40) Brett: practice Eddy: practice? And then? Brett: Everyday Eddy: 40 hours everyday, Ling Ling! Practice 40 hours, practice everyday, practice everyday? Brett: how many hours? Eddy: 40 4:14 4th round, swapping places (Laksa) Eddy: a very spicy dish, renowned in Singapore... very spicy. Brett: DURIAN Eddy: (sigh) uh noodles! Noodles with soup. Brett: mala.. soup. Char Kway Teow! (Dry noodle dish) Eddy: yellow noodles that sometimes contain (Brett: Egg!) sometimes contain chicken, Brett: char kway- Eddy: Soupy Noodles! Spicy, Brett: spicy noodles, / eddy: Singapore, Singapore / Brett: c-curry! Brett: uh.. / eddy: at the East side! We had it before, Brett: Laksa! / eddy: yesss 5:03 5th round (sacrilegious) Brett: ok I’m feeling this one let’s go Eddy: when a violinist, / Brett: Violin practice! Eddy: they play very fast, but every note is wrong Brett: sacrilegious! / eddy: right, yes! Brett: too easy I told you, feeling good about this one. 15 seconds? 15 second.. oh like 15 notes a second! 5:23 6th round, (viola) Eddy: if you don’t practice your violin, you end up having to play this instrument. Brett: hmmmm... which instrument could this be?...hmMmMMMM Eddy: very heavy Brett: hmmmmm... how difficult.. Brett: ‘heavy’ violin, viola. ( ‘heavy’ and ‘middle’ [middle violin= viola] have similar pronunciation ‘zhong’ but different intonation ) Eddy: yeah, nice, viola / Brett: nice / eddy: yeah 5:58 final question: how good were each other’s Chinese? Eddy: his (Brett) Chinese is not bad, quite good. Eddy: although I think paganiniana was a bit difficult for him to explain. (Laugh) Brett: when I tried to describe it, / Eddy: he could only say ‘Italian’ and ‘song’ Brett: eddy’s Chinese is good, I can understand it. / eddy: thank you, thank you Brett: Actually, I converse in Chinese with my parents when I am home, so that’s how I learnt. I didn’t learn much, how about you? Eddy: Back then, my mother would send me to Chinese school every Sunday, and tuition every Saturday, and violin lessons every Thursday. I would have Orchestra on Saturday mornings, uh QYS (Queenstown Youth Orchestra) Eddy: so (Saturday) morning is Orchestra, afternoon is tuition. I also had tuition on fridays. Chinese tuition was on fridays. Eddy: (recites a childhood poem) ‘the bright moon shines before my bed, (laugh) something something frost on the ground, I’ve forgotten already. Eddy: do you remember? / Brett: nah / eddy: oh, he forgot too. Announcing the performance 8:21 Eddy: for fans who aren’t able to see us live on stage, you can watch the livestream on youtube. Brett: the performance date is the 16th of November, see you then!

It's actually quite obvious that they are more nervous and restrained here compare to their own game videos when they would joke a lot more and give bigger reactions. But nonetheless, thanks for letting them speak Chinese again lol Love it!!

It's interesting that when they switch from English to Mandarin their mannerisms also change from very Australian to a little bit more Taiwanese.

Can we just talk about how attractive Brett sounds when speaking chinese ☺️
Eddy does have a good memory. He also excelled in school. They both speak Chinese well, and Eddy’s ability to remember how to write Chinese characters amazes me.

Love to listen to their Chinese 😊, although i don't know Chinese at all (being a Japanese, i can figure out some from subtile, though traditional Chinese is much easier to understand).

Omg omg omg!!! Now I want to hear Brett play the full Mendy using the Strad with Eddy as the whole orchestra! 😭😭😭 I mean, playing with an orchestra would be phenomenal but I love hearing just the two of them play 🥰 love this interview and game, even if I can only understand half of it! Hope there would be english subs 🥰🥰🥰
@cyrissiryc51262 жыл бұрын
@@ChiefHerzensCoach yes watched it online! It was awesome!!! But I also can't help but want a version with just the 2 of them playing Mendy 🥰 like, the 2M Tchaik is still my favorite version compared to other versions with a soloist and orchestra playing 🥰🥰🥰 but I also love Brett's Mendy with SSO! ❤❤❤ it would be additional work for Eddy to transcribe the whole orchestra part to a violin so, this wish will just stay in my dreams I guess 🥲

Did your English improve? Me - Laughs and says nothing. It’s not their mother tongue, so keep your negativity to yourself. It’s people like you that put people off learning languages. They spoke really well, many second generation kids can’t even hold a conversation.
