I don’t think many people have realized this but the Shuffler being Jerma is an obtuse reference to The Wizard of Oz. The prizes correspond to the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Lion, and the Shuffler secretly being a human is like the Wizard being just a guy behind a curtain controlling a big head, with Jerma being dressed like the guy behind the curtain in the movie as well.
