You are the most ingenious man I have ever seen in my life You made your own tarp and sewed all these unique little things on it not just the velcro but those little "tie" strings. You're the most ingenious man I've ever seen in my life. Is there anything that you don't know how to make? I thoroughly enjoy watching your videos and I think I've watched every one of them or at least tried to watch everything one of them. I can't wait to watch your next video. I know that you've made just about every video that you can make about backpacking and camping out in a hammock but I love watching you. some of your videos crack me up and I just bust up laughing till my side hurts. Keep up the good work Shug!

@@shugemery I just wanted to let you know that my girlfriend and I went up 10 days up to Michigan lake Superior and camped out in our hammocks and it was the most unique experience I've ever had in my life although we didn't go backpacking because we didn't have backpacks at the time but now after we came back in this summer she has talked me into getting a backpack and I pack it up with 22 lb of stuff and I do mean stuff like bug net the hammock the rain tarp food that can go for without too much prep and just odds and hidden things that you need to cook water I made my own fancy feast stove that you showed on one of your videos not only did I make one of them but I had to make oh no I had to make a half a dozen of them or more. Not only that but I made other alcohol burning stoves out of my husband's beer cans. And then like you I had to order other alcohol burning stoves over the internet and I think I'm about done with those. But the best stove I've found is the one that requires a tank of fuel like propane and it's the smallest little unfoldable gas burning unit I've ever seen in my life. It was my girlfriend that introduced me to your videos. We don't get a lot of snow in Ohio anymore it seems like it rains clear up to the middle of January these days. it'll snow and then it'll rain and mailed it away and then it will snow again then it will rain and melt it away again. It is in a patella about the last of January all through February that the snow finally decides to stay until March. We don't get extreme temperature change like you do up there where you live. You simply amaze me with camping out in zero degree weather. I can't even get myself to go out and walk in the snow in that kind of weather, Yet here you are camping in it... And not in a tent but in a hammock. I wish you all the best in health and happiness and keep doing what you love.

@@shugemery Oh yeah I watched that one and I was shivering to the bone just watching you. And I'm thinking to myself what kind of crazy man does this. Why, "SHUG," that's who! When you hear snow crunch under your feet you know it's flipping cold. We're supposed to get snow here tomorrow in Ohio but I'm thinking that's probably unlikely since we haven't had any now for quite some time. But we can always hope. Your circus days and you're juggling and your antics just about flip me out watching you. I don't know if you know what poi spinning is, But I've been doing poi spinning. When I tried to learn to figure eight spin with these tennis balls inside of nylon stockings...I hit myself in the eye the forehead the nose of few times before I learned how to get it right. But like you I had a shoulder problem and trying to spend the poi is kind of painful now. But I still do it from time to time and then I invested into these pod poi that light up with different colors and it's really cool to see it in the dark. Then I watch this guy spin poi with chainmail pods with double odd steel wall inside and they light them on fire and start spinning them on chains and that's wild to see. So when I watched you do some of your circus acts and juggling with your friend taking turns switching it up and grabbing those bowling pins and interchanging with each other just totally amazed me. Please never stop doing what you love doing. And sharing it with others on the feed like KZbin. We have to get away from the TV and the news stations in some way or another and watching your videos is such a joy.

I have oft wondered how to get the the snow to fall off the tarp once it starts to accumulate. This method you have invented with reaching your arm up to knock the snow off seems to me that it just might actually work. I am thinking about the procedures needed to complete such a task and it just dawned on me that I would need to see a video on how to get that done. You might need to do that in a series of videos to show the differences of doing that during the day, or during a windstorm, and possibly 2 for night-time removal because that might get too technical to "cover" in one video! Thanks, another great video here and I learned much as usual!

I would not sew mine shut. Sometimes weather changes (wind) and you need to button down one side and open the other. Easier than re-pitching the tarp. That is my thought. Kinda limit your options sewing shut. Maybe buttons or snaps would be better. Carry forth.

If silnylon is anything like clothing liner fabric then it can be much more easily sewn when strips of paper are sewn with in it... Newspaper (underneath to help the feeding dogs work better) and some painters tape (so the paper does not move around the nylon) will do nicely. You can afterwards rip away (or make wet and peel away) the paper from the seem... Makes life much easier....

This comment made me laugh...I remember being married and having to answer that question. Now I'm single and it doesn't matter! LOL

I try my best not to look too excited when a box arrives and to avoid answering my wife if possible. Because the follow up question is worse. Something along the lines of just how many stoves or tents or hammocks does one man need? Yikes!

@dragon383110 жыл бұрын
Great video shug! A question though.... with the pole on the inside, and the tarp touching it.... would it not want the snow/rain want to come in and drip on you like canvas does? Even in a tent "nylon" it seems like if my gear touches the sides, I get water coming in at that spot
@shugemery10 жыл бұрын
Silnylon does not leak to the touch but I really only use the pole mod in winter so the rain is frozen.

Love your vids Shug really like your pole mod I would like to do that to my war bonnet super fly once I get it. Do you think instead of sewing that line into the ridge line you could just secure the pole to the ridgeline?
@shugemery10 жыл бұрын
Not sure what your asking...the line is what secures the pole. You can send your tarp to 2QZQ to have it all done.

Shug, I've often heard you and other hammock hangers talk about "going to ground". What are the reasons you would need to go to ground and how is that done with your equipment?

I'm surprised you didn't sew in any reflective material to the underside of the tarp to reflect heat to back to you in temperatures that low.
@shugemery8 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure that truly works unless there is a true heat source to reflect back on you. The tarp keeps wind off and feel that helps immensely in sub 0º temps. Really fine with that.

Great video as always sir.I do have one question ...sorry to be personal, but--how do you deal with,lets call it a bathroom visit in the night?Its the one thing that pees me off (see what I did there?)when Im comfortable and warm.Any hints or tips would be greatly appreciated.

A couple of good things to have are: A ground tarp under the hammock so you can get out of the hammock in the middle of the night to stand without getting your feet dirty/wet. I have a piece of DuPont Tyvek that weighs next to nothing and is waterproof. I put my pack on top of that to keep it from moving. That way I can get out of my hammock and stand on the Tyvek in my socks without getting them all mucked up. The second thing is 2-4 EMPTY Energy Drink Bottles like Powerade or Gatorade with the wide mouth screw tops. The bottles were full on the first day of every trip, but were consumed on the way in. It makes for easy middle of the night "restroom breaks"! Since you're under your tarp in the middle of the night, a Red LED light clipped onto a baseball cap helps a ton to move around. In the morning you can just empty the bottles out at an acceptable location and reuse them. Make sure you remove the labels from the bottles and/or label them "Latrine Bottle" or something similar so you don't confuse them with your real beverages! LOL I hang my boots inside my hammock (after slamming them together to get all the dirt/snow off of them) by hooking a carabiner though the laces and hanging it on my ridgeline that runs under the bug net. I then slide it down the ridgeline closer to my feet. This allows them to air out over the night, but remain inside the hammock so bugs/etc. can't get into my boots. When you need to get your boots on to go further than your ground tarp, I first unzip my bugnet (I have a Hennessy Asym Zip with the zipper on the side). I transition to the sitting position with my feet dangling in the air. I then get my boots that are hanging on the ridgeline inside the hammocks bug netting and unhook the carabiner and put them on. It takes a little practice but you can get your boots on and off without them even touching the ground. The ground tarp is mainly for the middle of the night quick pee breaks so you don't have to leave from underneath your tarp, which comes in handy when it's pouring outside. ;-)

I just get up and go. Some try to pee in a bottle or such but I like getting up and seeing the night. Feels good getting back in and warm.

I am about to sew up my a winter tarp with silnylon and was wondering what you would suggest. I pinned up the ridge line with the bulk and was going to sew it then pin up and make the cat cuts. But this stuff is just as slick as you said and am now wondering if I should but each side out first and then work on sewing it up. What would you suggest? And I apologize if you have answered this already.... every time I start reading thru all the post I see something else that gets my attention and I am off to learning something new.

Great video shug, your advice has always been great , thanks . Do you know or a similar tarp to your design for sale ? I have tried to sew in the past and it was a terrible experience hahaha Thanks again for all the great advise over the years
Question for ya Shug, I'm adding a 7mm pole to my tarp, just ordered some pole pockets from Donna, who by the way had nice things to say about you! Anyhoo, the lenth of your added pole, was just the length of pocket-end to pocket-end?
@shugemery6 жыл бұрын
Yessir. I used a couple of old tent poles to help me get the proper length for my tarp.

Could you explain the Hammock Gear TQ "30 degree insert" you used inside your 0 degree Black Mamba. Is it another TQ or is it a sleeping bag? and under what condition do you use the insert. I know there is math is some of this hammock camping (30 degree hang angle, ridge line length should be around 83% of tarp length, etc)....so.... Is there some kind of math you apply to all these ratings? For example: if forecast says -14.....then a 0 degree black mamba TQ + a 30 degree insert equals what ? to protect you against -14. (Am I overcomplicating this??).....BTW I like the way you velcro'ed the door closed, if you don't mind I think I will copy you on my WB SuperFly....thanks
@shugemery9 жыл бұрын
+RS Marett The insert is just what I call it. Really just a 30º TQ but I got it made to put in my podsystem in deep winter. No formula for me...just an educated quess I reckon.

+shugemery ...thanks...sorta what I though on no formula...but I've seen what you've done from -41 to hot summer trips...so I know pretty much what to do....thanks Shug
