I didn't include it in my predictions for shortlist, but I definitely wouldn't be upset if it was there 😁

Fantastic book - I grew up in Glasgow in the 80s and 90s and it’s just like that in the places described. Beautiful and tragic story.

Great review! I loved this book but always have a hard time articulating *why* I like a book and you nailed it.

Such a good review. You and Kieran are my go-to for all things Booker. I think there's still a lot of that pressure to be 'masculine' in our culture today, especially in certain areas of the country. And, as having alcoholics in my family, you eventually do stop expecting change to occur. It's very sad.

Thank you!! Yes, definitely agree. I loved that looking back, this book pointed out how terrible that pressure is on both men and the people around them.

Loved this review and your analysis of all the themes in this book! (though Kieran has accustomed me to thinking that all Shuggie Bain reviews will include a tiny tiny baby, so slight points off for that, haha! 😂😂)

😂😂 The best I've got is a cat and I don't think she'd be happy with me holding her through a book review haha But yes, his video was so cute!! Loved that she was a part of it 😊

Shuggie "Pain" - there's little by way of illuminating insight into alcoholism in this book - save yourself some time and watch the movie "The Lost Weekend" - only 101 mins long - for a depiction of alcoholism - some of the interaction between Shuggie and his mother is affecting but I'd say this book would have worked better as a novella - 200 pages, or thereabouts, max.

Great work Sarah! you crushed this review. seriously well done. I loved the quotes you shared too and the detail around the higher the highs, the lower the lows and how it is poignant in the novel. 👏 👏 👏

It’s both an easy read, and a difficult one. You can sail through it and still understand as I’ve you’ve read it slowly., but it’s so dark at times you need to take breaks.

I found this book is poorly written. The point of view is all over the place. If you start as first person then stay there. I found it hard to follow.
