You are the second person in my life give the term Shugyo the time and understanding it deserves.

Ouch! Dharma is NOT Dao. You are excluding the origins of Chinese indigenous philosophies.

Getting too caught up in the techniques and not the flow. Good dharma is good dao, they don't conflict each other. Dao is a path, dharma the the law and sadhana the realisation.

Thanks for taking the time to comment. Definitely not minimising or excluding the Chinese philosophies, especially Lao Tzu and The Yellow Emperor. There is, nevertheless, strong evidence connecting many concepts found in Taoism with Sanatan Dharma, the collective spiritual teachings of ancient India which later were labeled "Hinduism" by outsiders, and was the source of influence of Buddhism. The Buddha was born as a (what would later be called) Hindu. So most of the terms used in Buddhism were from sanskrit/Sanatan Dharma. We'll never fully know to what extent Hinduism/Buddhism influenced Taoism though, simply because it was so long ago and none of us was there. And arguing too strongly either side is more an argument in support of our own biases than in support of hard evidence. One well-known scholarly paper I read is about 50 years old if I remember rightly. Written by Erik Zürcher. It was a reviewed article called "Buddhist Influence on Early Taoism: A Survey of Scriptural Evidence". So whilst the use of the word Tao is very Chinese, its connection in both meaning and etymology with the Sanskrit word Dharma is also recognised. Also, it's worth noting that Sanskrit is etymologically connected to many languages, including most European languages. So, I agree that Dharma is not Tao. I would add, though, that the central teachings, the essence of both Tao and Dharma are one.

@@BudoTraining I like to read as well. True understanding as they say is zen. To be a scholar is one art and kyokushin is another
