I like the blend since they seem to balance each other out. I have an SM58 and an e609 - not quite the same models you have, but close - and so far I can use either one and usually get what I want. I own both for years yet still I am watching this comparison 😅 I started out with the sm57 but was too harsh on the top for me so later I got the e906 as well. The e906 is a fantastic mic. 1 humble TIP I can give is, have the Sm57 on the edge of axis at a 45 degrees angle facing the cone. This will eliminate any fizzy top and give a smoother sound.

@intheblues: Nice comparison, great video. I took a week long class on microphones, placement, and the actual math involved, and wanted to share something with you from that experience. When placing a mic like the sm57, we were taught to place the mic slightly off center axis, and angled very closely to the same angle as the cone of the speaker. I was wondering, (for yourself, not the review), if you would try it and let me know your thoughts. THIS IS NOT intended to detract in any way from this review. I love your channel.

Both great mics. In most live situations and in more studios I’ve recorded I’ve I always had an SM57. It’s just a standard. There’s a company called “amp clamp” that makes a great slotted bracket that lives discretely on your amp to hold a cool mini mic clamp for a 57. It goes on my fav amps and I carry a 57 in my gig bag. Mucking amps live for clubs is so needed to keep the volumes from getting insane. IMO I’ve always felt a 57 recreates the tone out of your amp accurately. I place em in the middle of the edge and the cone and it’s always pretty accurate that way.

7:42 (the comparison on the clean channel of the Filmore 50), the SM57 captures the Strat Quack better, in my opinion. Since I play a Strat, and tend to play cleaner, I think I would like the SM57 better. But they both sound great, and I would absolutely use the E906 for thicker sounding guitars/gain.

I think the e906 for me on this one. It sounds more open while the 57 sounds, well, a little muffled. This is quite evident on the Marshall ultra high gain comparison. I wonder if this can be helped by placing the 57 on a different part of the cabinet hmmm? I think it does make sense though. The Sennheiser has a better frequency response on spec and that's clearly on display here.

However because they are placed in different spots on the speaker cone, I wonder how much of the tonal difference is from the mics themselves and how much is that one is on axis and the other off? Back in my live production days, we had a selection of different mics, which was great if you knew exactly what you were going into, the trouble is that most of the time, you don't. I would often just take a box of 58s, which to be honest, if used correctly, are more versatile and more durable than 57s. Granted that this is about recording and so a different application, but I'd still say that if you're on a budget, and plan to do a wide variety of styles, a set of 58s is going to serve you well. Yes, it means developing a different 'particular set of skills', and being willing to endure endless lectures about how you're doing it wrong, but honestly, I bet most people wouldn't even be able to tell the difference. Now, if you have the money, that's a different kettle of fish altogether...

@philroach60004 жыл бұрын
I just needed to point out the big discrepancies your mic placement. You could have easily called this video a cone vs off-center comparison, which give markedly different tones. So this isn't really an apples to apples comparison. Not trying to be a troll, just needing to clarify for anyone who is new to these mics. I own both, and the video still gives an accurate representation of what each does; the 906 has a more balanced and smooth tone vs the 57 which is punchier in the high mids and a little fizzy with overdrive, so in that regard it's still realistic.

Interesting, I thought they sounded very similar, with main but slight difference being in the top end. It seemed that E906 was generally brighter, but when you played the Fillmore it was the SM57 that seemed brighter? I guess it is down to whether you want to spend quite a bit of cash for a mic that's less likely to be bumped into on a stage. In my eyes the main advantage of Sennheiser is you can place the mic stand next to the cab and have it almost flush with the speaker, unlike a protruding Shure, waiting to be knocked out of it's place..... But even when buying used, you can get ca. 3 SM57's for one E906.

Well, I think the SM57 was better at tonal detail, but not so good at dynamic expression and shear power for which large diaphragm mics are renown. So, basically the 2 mics here seemed polar opposites to me The e906 gave the dynamic expression but lacked tonal detail. Using the 2 together sometimes felt like the safe option when only one or other of these characteristics were present in the music. However, when they were both present, I the think the combo worked very well. So, basically nothing here is a one size fits all solution IMO. Interesting demo!

You mean brighter! It has more treble response.

@@DMSProduktions For me, it has less mid focus, what I like. That seems to be brighter.

@@DMSProduktions not only better treble response. 906 has even better low end than the sm 57. If you choose the presence cut position on a 906 can be also darker than the sm57. I love my 57 but 906 is just a better mic on everything.

Both sounded good. Was the real SM57 better than your copies? I was more impressed with the Boogie - sounded awesome. I like Mesa stuff, just not the price tag!

Both good mics, of course. But personally, I find the Sennheiser too harsh. Surely there are situations when that's precisely what you want, but it wouldn't be my go-to mic for guitar. Good comparison, though. Thanks for the video.

Nice vid, but is it a real e906 or fake? It doesn't have "made in Germany" and "CE" labels on the handle ( the back side).

The 57 was better on the mids, which makes sense. The 609 sounded better overall to me. So yeah, use both. Now I just have to explain it to my wife since I just bought a new amp, a new Classic Vibe Strat, and redid another strat. I'll figure it out. I shouldn't have sold my 57's.

The mics are both on different parts of the speaker cone. Not a very accurate test of tone. If you wanted to do a more accurate test but have both mounted at the same time I would mic the left edge with one and the right edge with the other.

Revisiting with different speakers and now I like the other mic better...

*I’m considering buying this mic but I like using minimal EQ in my playing. 🎙️ It seems really good for the money. I have an sm57 but it is too upper-mid based. The E906 seems to add more warmth though so I’m undecided.*

Check out my latest review of the Austrian Audio OD5. It's right between these two mics sonically.

The e906 is definitely a Brighter sound …which works for me ! The combo was hot as well so if you have both Why not use them one on each speaker if u use 2 12’s Ext

Hugely preferring the e906 - it sounds more open and full.

I have both, the SM57 really shines compared to the 906. For distorted rock cabs, the 906 is too mid and high-centric. The 57 covers a much better frequency range. The 906 for me would be a cheap and easy way to mic a cab for live performance, but again it does not sound better that an sm57 in my shoot outs.

The mics are not in the same place on the speaker. That influences the tone a lot.

SM57 all the way for me. Couple of higher frequency's I didn't like from the E906

The SM57 sounded better with the Mesa than the other amps, it sounded a bit more clear and captured the amp's high end a little better

Odd how another video pits the SM57 to be superior than e906. here, it seems the sm57 saturates at LMF too soon, making sounds less intelligible.

Sennheiser E-906 is The Boss. Plus it has it's own built-in switchable EQ profile. it is so very versatile. It works well with electrics, acoustics, drums and horns. I own both of these microphones too. Both are pretty great.
