Put the audio samples of the two mics back to back in the video. A/B between so we can hear/see the difference.

The SM7, the SM57, and the SM58 are all based on the Unidyne III capsule design. The SM7 capsule is not identical to the SM57 or SM58, but it is similar.

With a Zoom H4n Pro, the Fethead is a must have. ❤

The preamps in the ID14 are of similar performance to the Fethead (ie. great) so I don’t think there is much to be gained by using one here. If you had a noisy interface like my Zoom H6 it would make a difference. I did think you sounded smoother without the Fethead, although there wasn’t a lot in it.

Yea, you don't really need a Fethead in this case. True. Just wanted to test it though.

I had a SM57 for a while and with my Audio interface(old version of Komplete Audio 6) even if I boost the gain to maximum I can barely hear myself and a lot of noise appears. I was thinking of this preamp and I think for speaking vocals will help me to get a clearer voice sound. I think my interface does not have that good of a preamp that is why I am thinking about buying one. What do you think? Also I've seen a triton with high pass filter not sure which to buy standard or with filter. Thank you!

Hmm, maybe try to get your hands on a preamp befor buying a new interface :) I would just take the default fethead, if it does not please you, just send it back and take a look around a new interface

Cool. I have the same id14. You just saved me $99. Don’t think ai need a Fet head anymore. But please try for us the Soyuz Launcher maybe it sounds nicer too.

The issue with this test method is that, that you hear so much room noise, that it becomes hard to hear noise from microphone and preamp.

I am sorry. Best I could do :(

@@floriangladis you can get XLR resistors that will test preamp noise (if you can find one). It'll just plug in without a mic. If you're testing with a mic (a real world thing anyway) you can wrap it in towels and place it in a box and that should acoustically isolate it a fair bit.

we use golden age passive ribbons w fethead,,, good,,, but ribbon flavor becomes fet flavor

Its not much different to a classic mixing desk in my mind, the sort of colouration imo. I like it but there are more transparent options (eg just the massive gain option of an RME interface for one).

This A/B comparison didn't really tell us anything useful. First - you need to copy the sound source (just like re-amping guitars for pedal and amp tests), recording audio from a speaker for example. Second - compare noise levels only after normalizing voice audio. There should be less preamp noise without cranking the gain

I want this to boost my SM57 because the recorded sound is much lower than I want out of my 4x12 Marshall cab. My current software cannot boost sufficiently for my KZbin videos. Anyone use this for guitar?

Thank you for this video, I have a Shure SM7B with a Rode Rodecaster Duo, and in the background of my microphone there is consistent static or (EIN) is there any way I can minimize this, and would the Fethead help troubleshoot this, or would I be better off looking for better softwares for sensitivity?
