The AT4040 is such a good mic, it’s a workhorse mic, it’s smooth and bold at the same time, subtractive eq your vocals properly with proper mic technique ( try rapping more towards the top of the mic rather then in the middle of the capsule) super smooth and clean, stacking vocals and doubles with this mic is insanely good aswel.

AT4040 destroyed the SM7B on the guitar. On the vocals I think the AT4040 was tracked too hot or underpowered because on 2:55 you can clearly hear it distorting, and since it's the raw track it can't be compression or other effect.

So after years of working things out with just the mic I have I decided that I want to upgrade since I'm not getting hot signal (I don't have a Cloudlifter) Sm7b is basically industry standard these days but I happened to know that Joey Sturgis (one of the biggest metalcore producers in the world in the last 15 years) used to usually work with the AT4040 I know I've said metalcore but I actually need a mic to record lots of *clean singing vocals, not only screams Again, I don't have a Cloudlifter, so that's why I think to go with the AT4040 but afraid to make a mistake because I never had a condensor before (I do have phantom power on my audio interface that I know is necessary for condensors) , what do you guys say I should go with? *I do record scream vocals but it doesn't necessarily means that the screams have a super high output.. Most of the time the clean vocals signal is actually hotter

bro trust me if you do boombap an sm58 (it sounds similar to the SM7B however it lacks that air/crispiness of a condenser that you probably won't care for boombap) is gonna be the best mic ever for you.

@@thegrimreaper270 Both are great, neither is better than the other, but the difference is that one is dynamic and the other condenser, it will depend on the results you want to obtain, I bought the Audio Technica because for me it has better detail in the voice and instruments, and it's cheaper In my country, It's important to mention that I do not have the need to sell it in some years, keep in mind that the price of the SM7B in the end will be $550 because you need the cloudlifter and the AT4040 $300

Perfect example of horses for courses. Singer in red has a higher, harsher voice and the SM7B is perfect to shave it off and give him a silky sound. Singer in black (terrific singer BTW) has a more midrange, nasally voice and that 4040 shaves the mid, accentuates the high, and creates color. One size does not fit all. These two mics are both great. For my mid-rangy, flat voice, the 4040 is awesome and gives so much character as well. It is not a transparent mic. The SM7B does me favors if I'm singing in falsetto. BTW, for me a high-end Neumann sounds raspy and low in character next to 4040. The two mics you have demoed here are both absolutely fantastic mics and you can get both for a reasonable price.

you should have used the output gain on the 610 to add the gain to the Shure SM7B because using the drive knob also makes it a darker sound so the raw comparison isnt 100% in my opinion I believe the SM7b could have been a bit brighter

@@KelliMusic Let me be a bit more clear. Yea the SM7B is flat. But the way you used the unison amp on the Apollo.. The 610 from my experience tends to overall darken the sound when you drive it hard like that. It’s understood you had to drive it in this demonstration as the SM7B needs a lot of gain.. That being said the “output gain” on the 610 is a “Clean” digital sound where as to the drive knob is the saturation/character. So I’m basically saying that the way you gain staged the SM7B could have caused it not to be as “raw” or “natural” as it could have been in this demo. Which I assume would have made the example maybe a tad bit brighter since the 610 tends to roll off high end information when again “pushed that hard”. Great review though brother I appreciate you.

The SM7B was definitely not distorting as much as the AT4040 but that's probably because the gain was a hair lower on it. I find it hard to believe he was singing that loud as to overload the diagram of the mic. Hard to compare with that annoying distortion buz when he sings louder. You may have perceived it as overly bright or aggressive.

Just as I suspected. You can hear the microphone distorting or the gain is too high. Seeing the SM7B can take far far more in volume then you obviously set the gain too high. When Horizon sings across the room you can hear he sounds normal and not the overloading sound. I've noticed this in a few of your videos now. Which is weird cause the mix sounds good. Turn the gain down or get new mics as they are defective or replace whatever component is distorting because it's defective. I truly doubt it's the mics or the equipment though. So it's more than likely a gain issue. Also if it is you need to remake all you videos as I'm sure they all have the clipping in them seeing how at least 3 have it. You can't compare anything if it's clipping and that's a fact. You should be recording with at least 6dbs of headroom not if 10dbs. You're loudest sounds should be 6dbs down from max output which is 0db not plus 4db or plus 10dbs which some soundboards and audio equipment lets you push things to. Idk why others can't hear the clipping? I don't have that good of ears. Hope this helps or someone can explain what I'm hearing. I don't hear it on over videos. I like some of your jams. Peace

Didn’t you comment this like two days ago then delete it? So. It clipped on 1 sec of his verse cause he shouted so that makes my talking, my part, the guitar and the rest of the video useless? If that was a song. All we would do is re take it & get horizon to take a step back. It’s not that deep. Shouting can cause any mic to distort & these are freestyles, we have no idea what we are about to say. If we had these written and knew horizon was gonna shout then I woulda turn the gain down, not the case. And cause ya know, imma remake like 50 videos cause a couple seconds of Horizons part is distorted....lol. I’m aware on how to record vocals, it’s how I eat. If the take was really useless and threw the whole review off I wouldn’t use it, again...not the case....And I’m sure other ppl hear it, the difference issss, they realize there’s more to the review. You can still clearllllyy tell the difference in the mics, I think the comparison is valid.
