Is the $400 iconic Shure SM7B dynamic microphone worth the extra cost over the (also iconic) $100 SM58 and SM57? What are the sound differences between the mics, and which one should you get?

Based on this review, SM7B has more warmth. SM57 & 58 are the same based on my own ears. When it comes to quality, if I have the money I won't compromise in sound quality and will get the SM7B. But the three of them appear to be built of the same high quality. I used to own an SM58 and I was amazed on it.

On ATH-M50x I could really tell ----but I also work in a place which has a lot of SM7Bs laying around so I could be biased. The 58s and 57s are close but Shure has those housings for a reason and they contribute to the tuning of the sound profile. The 58's darker like the SM7b and the 57 gives more clarity out of the the two smaller mics. Switching between the three, one can detect a "narrowing" of the voice path when going into the 57 or 58 while the SM7B will have a more "open" sound. But of course, when we EQ and compress in post, the 58 and 57 can come even closer to the SM7B's details. The question now is if that difference is worth the additional $300.

Hello Sir, i have a question. If I record the same verse on both dynamic mic and condenser mic. After mixing and mastering, what would be the difference between the poetry recorded from both the mics? Will both be of the same quality? Will both have different quality? If the quality of condenser mic will be crisp. So can I make the poetry recorded with dynamic mic sound crisp? like condenser microphone? Can I get the quality from the Shure SM58 microphone as in the video below? kzbin.infopBJdvpQtNZA?si=2kFyBbdjiogI3JM8

They sound v similar, but for vocals in general, I’d recommend the sm58

SM58 and SM57 are the same capsule. Just a different pick up pattern as the SM57 is designed for mic up instruments so is more focused where as the SM58 is designed for vocals. The SM58 is a great mic, hence its been "industry standard" in live music for years. If you are happy to spend a little more go for the Beta58 offering a bit of extra clarity and is also suited to people with higher voices. Also the mic of choice of Robbie Williams. In your demo the SM series mics sound clearer than the $400 mic. I'm ot familiar with the $400 mic but would imagine its the choice of pod casters etc.. because it's probably a wider pickup pattern like that of a mic designed for a radio studio where as the other mics are Stage mics and you need to be closer to them and more direct.

I do like all 3 🎤 microphone quality😊, but when I listen closely I hear that the SM57 SM58 sound very slightly box Nasaly compared to the SM7B .....not saying these are bad 🎤 microphones at, but i think it would be possible to correct with a parametric EQ in post production to match up to the SM7B 😉 well close enough 😊

Hey, thanks for your excellent video. Now I have both SM 57 for open mic(cause it's a tank), and 57 for my voice and instrument. I used to use the 57 that I can make my voice better because my voice is a little bit thin and focused on high audio frequencies. So, 57 makes a bright sound than 58(I wouldn't say I like the sound through the metal shield) and I can use this really closer to make a booming sound to make people attractive. In this case, what do you think about that I purchase the SM7B to get a more low range frequency and get stable high with a filter on mic? (I have pretty expensive preamp. No need to worry about it.)

Hmm have you tried adding bass and filtering out unwanted frequencies on the SM57? I think you can get pretty similar results to the SM7B if you mess with EQ. Tho the SM7B sounds cleaner to me and not as crunchy as the SM57 lol, but tbh they both sound awesome! If you have the $, get the SM7B tho cuz it’s amazing

Yes! Good observations 👌🏼 it’s a good trio of mics that can be used for different purposes, but yes, probably going to use the SM7B as my main mic for a while. We’ll see how it goes 🤘🏼

Yeah weirdly I kinda preferred the 58 too in these tests 🙃 it does have a bit more mouth noise and potential plosive action than the SM7B, but damn, they’re so close!
