I believe it's Oda's way to talk about that samurai proud that the sword of part of their lives, that the sword must be an extent of your arm. Zoro never treated his swords as parts of himself, it's always like something his trying to conquer. He respects Shusui, but Shusui is still a tool, with Sandai Kitetsu he's always fighting against the blood thirst of the sword and Wado Ichimonji is not even his sword, it's Kuina's sword. Before Shushui and Sandai Kitetsu he was always breaking his swords, Shusui and Sandai Kitetsu never broke because they are better forged, like Wado Ichimonji, I believe his sword will become black when he starts looking at the swords not like objects, but like parts of him. Even Shiki who uses blades as his legs could just see them as tools, not acknowledge them as his legs. That would explain why Whitebeard and Shanks' blades aren't black that could even explain why Yoru is black but his pendant knife isn't.

Great stuff BDA, I think Zoro did master what was asked of him at the time he learned how to activate his Haki and chanel it through his sword and we saw it become a black blade. That’s what Hawkeyes wanted him to master. Becoming a black blade and staying black are two different thinks and ability levels. when Zoro stops activating his Haki his sword returns to normal. We should look at that like level 1. Permanently making it black that’s a more advanced step that like u said requires more time, connection etc. we saw awakened fruit users change land temporary like with doffy and permantly like with Akainu and aoikiji 7 day battle on punk hazard , it’s probably a safe bet to say when your able to put Haki maybe an advanced form of armament into your blade and Haki blooms through battle your weapon you can start to make that temp change to black permanent.

when forging you heat and reheat the metal allowing it to 'cool' slowly so the molecules can be aligned just right. perhaps all the battles with haki constantly being forged into it... makes it change.

We can simply put that, steps on making a Black Blade is like Steps on Becoming a Super saiyan. Just in Katana perspective, Super Saiyan 3 = you forged yourself 3 Black Blades.

Small things we're missing: Prior to the time skip, Haki was not depicted the same in the manga or anime art. Haki infused strikes and weapons were not colored black until after the time skip. When Garp uses haki in his fists, they do not turn black the way they do in modern animations. The clashing of Conqueror's Haki between Shanks and Whitebeard did not show the black lightning that we saw between Luffy and Doflamingo. Just because the art was not depicted before the artistic decision to begin portraying it visually does not entail that the idea the art represents was not present. So the only weapons we did have labled as black blades for narrative purpose were Yoru and Shusui. As far as the coloring of the blade, the word I recall being used by Mihawk was 'stained'. Meaning that repeated coatings of the weapon in armament haki over years, if not decades, is what eventually leads to the permanent coloring. It has happened so many times that the steel permanently absorbed some of that will power and the coloring became permanent. This however hasn't told us much about what it does to the weapon itself, for example making an edge sharper, more resistant, etc than its basic quality as a sword makes it. We saw in the first battle with Mihawk that Wado Ichimonji was not cut while the 2 unnamed blades were cleanly cleaved. Even without it being a black blade, we saw it withstand the attack of Yoru. So either it withstood the strike from a Black Blade which was a meito grade higher (Supreme grade over Great grade), OR Mihawk was just using the example that a mastered blade can cut anything or nothing at the user's will and simply chose not to cut it- especially if he recognized the blade for its grade. All I personally recall is that the coloring becomes permanent, and that comes from basically life long use of armament haki with it. It will stay black with a new user, and a weapon of superior quality may not be a black blade if as much haki was not used on it by previous weilders because their skill as a sword user was enough without imbuing it with haki at all or as frequently. And given that we know certain graded swords to be nearly sentient- with Zoro claiming that Shusui has a "temper", and that Sandai Kitetsu is a "problem child", we can take the small jump in reasoning to believe that blades can for lack of a better term "consciously" interact with their user's Will/Haki. So it could be that these personalities, if real things and not just claims based on their feel, could affect the staining of haki.

A thought: I always assumed shanks handicapped himself in the Mihawk fights because, while Mihawk might be extremely powerful, there was no way he was literally as strong as Shanks. I assumed the two didn’t use haki or something like that. But if Shanks doesn’t have a black blade because he’s not quite as in tune with the way of the swordsman, then Shanks would need that haki difference to keep up on their duels. Makes me think.

All I’m saying is The timeline of Shanks and Mohawks battle makes no sense for both of them to be Yonko level when it would take a number of years more before Shanks finally became a yonko. Also, while Luffy and Zoro were similar in strength or at least portrayed that way pre time skip, it’s pretty clear Luffy is stronger and will be stronger. So it makes sense that his goal post is further than Zoro’s. Not to mention that swordsman doesn’t seem to refer to everyone who uses a sword, but specifically to those who follow “The way of the Sword”. Black blade for example is clearly not about strength and haki since Roger and Whitebeard don’t have them.

It seems pretty obvious. Blades becoming black signify the owner's indominable will of a swordsman being extended specifically through the weapon. However a blade retaining it beyond the owner's touch signifies a great swordsman passing on their will to another. Of letting go, in a way, of their will to be the best once they have achieved it, or because they desire again to be defeated, their sword now carries the will to be the greatest.

I can picture it in my mind. Zoro facing an enemy way stronger than him, perhaps Mihawk, and towards the end of the fight, he's losing. But then he has an epiphany like when he fought Mr. 1. Once he's defated the enemy, as a testament to his dedication and strength, a black sheen covers his blade.

Hopefully you see this, I know this video is old, but I have two theories about how the blade becomes black. #1 the blade is infused with ALL of your CoC-Haki. ALL of it. You have to sacrifice ALL of your CoC-Haki, and fuse it into your sword. No exceptions, no 99.9999999%. ALL. #2 Your will has to be greater than another's CoC-Haki, and you essentially "life steal" their Haki and fuse it into your blade, or alternatively. Another form of sacrifice must be made by one, given to another. Showing an even greater Conqueror's Will. This is similar to how Zoro accepted his fate with Mihawk in their first duel, but Zoro had no CoC-Haki, and Yoru was already black. I believe both of these theories directly relate to the spirt of a swordsman. Yes CoC-Haki is the best, but your sword is more important. We saw a hint of this when Zoro accpeted his fate with Enma, and Enma allowed Zoro it's power through the fusion of his CoC-Haki. So basically, it boils down to sacrifice, or simply. Seppuku.

Interesting topic. I think that there is some way to a swordsmith/swordsman to pour a part his of soul into the blade so it becomes something more. If you do it while forging, the blade can become a great blade (the blade gets some really high attributes), if your soul is wicked, the blade becomes a cursed blade, and if you mix it with you sould and your advanced armament haki, you get a permament black blade.

Mihawk also says you have to be ashamed about a nick in your sword, so i believe the black blades are just always as hard as haki-clad and therefore never get blunt, because they were forged by haki to be sharp and durable. I believe you have to be able to use ryou/goken to forge a sword black, because that's what allows you to not only clad the sword in haki, but to alter it's inner structure itself. The only question then is why doesn't Silvers Rayleigh have a black blade, because he can use goken, but I think it comes down there to what you said that Rayleigh is not a swordsman to the heart, his fighting style is rather similar to shanks, having a sword but using a lot of other means for fighting as well, so they probably used kings haki or goken on the enemy directly during fights and not channeling all their will into their swords like pure swordsman.

I predict to have a black blade you need to have your CoA at highest of the highest level until you can turn your blades black permanently. Only Mihawk and Ryuuma have their CoA at the highest level. Roger, Wb, Rayleigh, and Oden probably didn’t have it, but they can infuse their weapons with CoC to make up for it. That doesnt mean Mihawk and Ryuuma don’t have CoC.

Looking at this now both haki and ryou are important roles in the land of wano. I think the only way to achieve the black blade is through intense combat, and having a strong will. Zoros new sword enma will probably help him achieve that height since enma can also use the persons ryou and or haki to become even stronger, this makes sense about a regular blade turning into the most deadliest weapon in the world.

Great stuff BDA, no one is talking about the obvious expect you. Samurai believed their warrior spirit was contained within their katana. I think it definitely has some connections to a “black blade”. Not the haki, but the blade having a spirit of its own. When there is a bond between swordsman and blade, the blades’ spirit will manifest itself in battle. Reyleigh said it himself. Haki is spirit, presence. So yeah, good stuff bro!

The sword grades seem to simply account for the sword quality etc without accounting for things like Haki. A sword becoming a Black Blade with a strong swordsman seems to amplify its durability and Attack potential. The Grade system seems to account as a system recognised by swordsman around the One Piece World of the base level a sword is at before bringing in other factors like the user/s, Haki etc.

The one thing we know about black blades is that they can't nick or break so basically they become indestructible and from this we can assume a Saijo wazomono blade of higher grade quality than say the shisui can be broken despite being a grade quality higher. Which brings up the question like what do you think is stronger a Saijo wazomono black blade or a O wazomono black blade?

There are only 2 permanent black blades in the world till date....and for that...one must be a Sword God....Shusui and Yuro.... Ryoma and Mihawk are the only one capable of forging their Sword permanently black which Zoro will do with wado ichimonji...

This is a great discussion video! and yes I do agree with Brago on this. I might want to add to the mix, something that might not directly correlate with the topic.. but from what we just learned about the advanced armament haki from Luffy and Rayleighs's flashback, I do think Zoro had (kinda) mastered this before we knew it. We got hints of this from cutting down a ship before Fishman Island, battling Monet (probably a mix with his demonic aura -Conquerors haki???-), the filler arc at Silver Mine, and at the beginning of Wano when he cut down a house with a seppuku knife.

Im pretty late but had an interesting idea. What if theres also types of black blades. Like what you said, to forge a black blade, you'll need experience and other steps. Imagine if theres black blade forged because of love, killings, the user's sense of justice, pain and sorrow, etc. Imagine zoro's wado changed to a black blade but has like a different tint or has a pattern because of his experience and the sword's meaning and how special it is for him. I imagined this idea because of shisui's design. It may be just a coincidence but its red patern may mean the blade was used to kill A LOT of people and maybe yoru also has a back story thats why it has a tint of green. Also the specialness of black blades comes from the fact that someone like Whitebeard's Murakumogiri is a Saijo wazomono but it wasn't a black blade yet shisui which is an O wazomono is a black blade despite being a grade below the Murakumogiri and so it's specialness has more to do with just armament haki considering it's Whitebeard and he has immense amounts of AH and still his Saijo blade isn't a black blade. I also don't think it has anything to do with conquerors haki other wise Mogura and Murakumogiri would be black blades since their users are masters of Armament and Conquerors haki. I have a theory that perhaps Zoro's left eye once open signifies he's completely mastered making a black blade and will probably do so for Enma. Also this brings a whole new meaning to what does being the greatest swordsman in the world mean? Going by the whole Wano theme and swordsmanship having this code of honor and a it's a way of life and the blade is part of you aside from just strength and DC, then it makes sense why Mihawk has so much pride in his sword being black while you have other characters in the verse stronger than him who use swords but don't necessarily live the life of a true swordsman. I think ryuma was the greatest swordsman then Mihawk took the title and Zoro will do so and by that even if we assume Shiryu kills Mihawk, only Zoro will be the 3rd character in the verse to forge a black blade and will avenge his teacher and become the greatest swordsman. This fits perfectly with the juxtaposition of the straw hats and the black beard pirates who just want to look for the strongest people while there's much deeper connection between the straw hats than just strength.

I think it's more than you acknowledging the blade. I think the blade has to acknowledge you. I also think you need to feed it the blood of haki users and maybe crushing other swords as well. I think the sword's aura or will or whatever matters the most. The swords zoro inherits seem to share his lust for power and the power to protect and the power to surpass his limits. Keep in mind I'm just watching the anime right now and am where zoro received Emma. I'm sure the manga has passed this stuff by now.

Just like Rayleigh showed Luffy the basics of haki and Luffy must figure the rest out by fighting strong opponents I think the same applies to whAt Mihawk showed Zoro, it was the basics and the rest has to be figured out in battle! It's the exact parallel to Luffy. Both trained by legends both introduced to the basics. Just like Luffy trying the next step in haki Zoro will have to do the same!

Nope, Zoro already has Next Level Armament Haki, Specifically Advanced Busoshoku Koka. He grew the most during the timeskip. Luffy grew the least due to his trainer not being the best for him. Also, Luffy's Devil Fruit is what holds him back from growing.

i dont think imbuing haki over time is going to allow the blades to hav haki abilities like hitting logias. maybe need to understand the will and voice of the blade as well.... i think it just makes them increasingly dense and unable to chip. this makes their attacks heavier and powerful. but also only a top weapons user can use a heavier blade more effective.... one thing i dont like about or a little iffy about is that if u make a low grade sword black it seems it may cheat its way up into being on the level of a higher grade sword. but may be the 12 greatest weapons hav other special aspects

I know this vid is old but i just had to comment this thought i just had (manga spoilers ahead) i just read the manga and in the manga it has just been revealed that my boy zoro has conquerors haki now heres my theory i think permanent black swords become permanent black swords when they spend alot of time with their wielders or if there wielders have a strong will (conquerors haki) to me it kinda makes sense like ryuma and mihawk are both goats so it kinda makes sense however this theory is abit flawed as if that was the case all the yonkos and would have permanent black swords but i still think thats how permanent black swords are made another flaw would be that having a permanent black sword would be quite draining (sorry for English and bad punctuation also go easy on me im new to one piece)
