Before the T-14 Dramarta rolled onto the scene, the most controversial tank in the modern military enthusiast's meme catalog was the Challenger 2.
Much slated for being expensive, over-weight, with a frontal plate so weak it could be penetrated by cannons from World War Two, and a gun that couldn't compete with modern armor.
It was seen as a tank that was, impressive for its time in theory, but built by a cash-strapped former world power and thus had fallen far below the standard, an upgrade, to an upgrade, to an upgrade that no one in the British army had ever wanted to begin with and only tolerated out of a sense of national pride.
But is any of that true?
Long-term fans of my channel can probably guess the answer.

Noted errors:
The "Streetfighter" upgrade doesn't exist, it was a made-up name in a report by Capt Tom Quant and basically involved painting the tank in a more snazzy camouflage.
The actual upgrade package is called TES (Theatre Entry Standard) and includes other upgrades like a remote gun on the turret roof and an absolute bollock-load of ERA.
The ammunition is three-piece, not two-piece.

@@TalesOfWar It's funny because just like the challenger UK politics are just a little different from everywher else. In the rest of the world the saying is "The left wants a small military and to send it everywhere, and the right wants a big military and to send it nowhere" But in the UK it just seems completely random, you got Tony Blair invading Iraq and then Tori governments reducing the military budget to nothing. Then again your Tories did get some cool new aircraft carriers and stuff for your navy.
@TalesOfWar
@TalesOfWar 13 күн бұрын
@@nilloc93 The new carriers and destroyers were ordered by the Labour government before the Tories got in and cut everything. They even tried to cancel the second carrier from being built but there was a clause saying it would have to be paid for even if they didn't build it. They also cut half the order of Type 45 destroyers from 12 to 6 and cut the order of F35's to the point where we can't even fill a single carrier. They're shared between the Navy and RAF. It's dumb. They also got rid of tens of thousands of personnel across all the military branches, mostly officers and people with actual experience. The Tories have always been about cutting spending on things, but not spending money. The money just ends up in private hands rather than benefiting the public who are actually paying for it.

Fun fact, my country(Finland) was mocked for decades because we had a large artillery and tank force(for our size). Nobody understood why we held onto even old cold war era artillery guns, and continued to buy new MLRS systems in the 2010s. We even hold yearly live fire excercises with them which shocked many central european nations. I remember reading how other european countries are retiring all their tanks, and maybe we should too because who are we using them against? "Russia has problems but they can be handled" they said. Nobodys mocking us now for keeping all that. In fact a lot of new jobs are now opening in munitions factories.

Finland made the correct choice in realizing that the post-Cold War peace was a reprieve, not a permanent change. My country, Sweden, made the wrong choice, drastically scaling down our military and arms production while blindly chasing the ideals of peace - assuming, very foolishly, that just because *we* don't want war, that means nobody else would want war with us. Fortunately, our politicians were shook wide awake on that front.

As a Pole I can understand completely your attitude. It was our President who have said in 2008 in Tbilisi: "We in Poland know this very well that today it's Georgia, tomorrow Ukraine, the day after tomorrow - the baltic states, and then maybe time will come for my country, Poland!" He was ignored. But it wasn't just him thinking that in Poland. Also we kept our T-72s and PT-91s in service far longer than it was economically viable. And whaddaya know, those tanks are now fighting the Russians on Ukraine.

Technically Ukrainian conflict show that retiring tanks on itself was not that bad idea. But there is a huge difference between expeditionary operations and front line combat. Crimea situation was... interesting. The reason why it never developed into a full scale major war is because the sanctions worked, almost too well aganst something the size of Russia. Kyiv remained safe because the Russians were quick to abandon their larger war aims and were happy to get what they got. That being said, claiming that Europe wasn't really doing anything after that is wild. They did quite a bit and alongside US support and the very real threat of another invasion is why the second war ended up being far different. In 2014 Ukraine had major issues of unity and their armed forces needed to reorganize. Ukrainian officers received support almost as soon as this happened. Naturally, this has also been a wakeup call for Ukraine but where exactly do you think the extra profits and money are coming from to make this function?

@LazerPig , back in 2015 I did an Erasmus internship at this London based architect company that was run by Italian immigrants. I'm a Finn and I had done my mandatory conscript service years before. When the 2014 invasion of Crimea happened, our Armed Forces sent out this "reservist letter" to every reservist who had a wartime position. The letter basically told you what your job was if a war breaks out. One day at the office I mentioned to my colleagues about our building norms that require each apartment block to have a bunker built into the cellar and I also mentioned that letter. My Italian coworkers all looked at me kinda weirdly and then my boss (who was Italian) asked me: "Why?". I told him that it was all in case a war broke out. He replied to me: "What war? That is ridiculous, there's no need for that because there will never be any war ". I replied that one can never be too sure and it's not stupidity to be prepared for such a thing. He looked at me along his nose, smirked and commented something about the stupidity of it all and continued his work. I kinda like to know what he thinks of my country's preparedness now? His attitude immediately came into my mind when you talked about NATO's readiness level back in those days.

Compliments for placing this information before the noses of other EU/NATO members: FINLAND has dealt with the morons from the East a few decades ago, and know the Bastards for what they REALLY ARE. As OTTO BISMARCK said: "never trust Russians because Russians don't even trust themselves". After fighting the crappy Russian Army in a prelude to WW II the Courageous and Wise Finn's resolvedly vowed NEVER AGAIN, and their society has employed this principle for more than 80 years. ♾

As a small note to the video conclusion: NATO went from having a multi-layered air defense network that had everything from autocannon-armed guntrucks to mobile, long-range SAM systems in the 1980s, to relying on relatively small Patriot battalions and older HAWK missiles, with almost no SHORAD capability outside of a few odd programs that really just amount to slapping IRST and MANPADs, potentially a gun or cannon of some kind, onto an existing transport chassis, and whatever Gepards are still in service with European nations.

Dabbing on Europeans is more so usually just a fun joke to bring up once in a while, which is usually followed by an “AT LEASHT OWER SKEWLS AINT CALL OF DOOTY”. Honestly right now, America is in heavy political division. No outside force is going to unite us unless it ends up making its way over the oceans and somehow more directly impacts the American population as a whole. America is just so disconnected from the rest of the world, both mentally and geographically, whatever makes its way over here gets so bent out of shape by our media it just turns into a fat mess. That goes for both Right and Left leaning voters. Overall, I just don’t think America really wants to get majorly involved into another modern war. We’ve already got a lot of flank from our previous conflicts, from Vietnam to the recent Afghanistan withdrawal. And our politicians are also rotting. All in all it’s a really screwed scenario

I think it should be noted that US was caught with its pants down too. Military budgets for the last two decades have been high, but focused on weapons suited for low intensity, high precision, high cost warfare. While these have served Ukraine well, the ability to ramp up manufacture of both these precision weapon systems and simple items like artillery shells was quite limited. The US industrial base is going through a learning process just like Europe on how to scale up manufacturing for a high intensity war.

Bloody Yank here. I've honestly never had a bad impression on the Challenger or any modern British tank, I've always found them to be just what Britain needed for their defense. Maybe they have some trouble in certain theaters, but that comes down to poor logistics not design. Any good soldier knows if you take care of your equipment, it takes care of you. As for the accusation that it was built to be just "good enough", a wise man I have great respect for said this: "sometimes good enough, is just perfect"

German here. Every tank that manages to bring it's crew home after multiple RPG and even a fucking MILAN hit, is a good tank. Also no matter where the tank comes from, with a braindead crew, a incompetent leadership and/or tactics that don't work in reality (Tanks are not meant to be parked on a ridge without any support), the only thing you get in the end is a smoldering, multi-million -INSERT CURRENCY HERE, paperweight and a bunch of nice written letters, for whomever the crew lefts behind. The Challenger Deux and it's little brother, the Warrior, are friendly and capable creatures, you just have to give 'em a chance.

@@rbaxter286 It wasn't an absolute statement, im not a 2 dimensional villain in a Saturday morning cartoon. But survivability, if not for tank but at least for the meatbags that operate it, is an important trait, specially if the training, coordination and teamwork of said crew goes further than, "This is your tank, these are your buddies, you have to work together no matter what, here is the manual for the vehicle and there on the horizon is the front line, good luck!" No, we want those motherfuckers to survive, because they cost us money already and a puddle of blood, tissue and splintered bones can neither operate that vehicle, nor makes a good impression for morale. That is why we also invented ejection seats, because a pilots education and training is even more expensive than that of good tanker already is.

They already shot down Migs with Stingers and jerry-rigged NATO missiles onto Soviet wing pylons, the Ukrainians are some crafty nutters, I have no doubt that if a Ka-52 got within LoS of the last functioning Challenger 2 in Ukraine, that a shell would be sent downrange. As a Brit, my biggest argument to helping UA is the fact we signed the Budapest Memorandum. Of course there is a moral and strategic element which are massive reasons to help, but I always coldly argue that we signed that treaty and thus are obliged to help. Regardless of what, we gave them our word. I do wish more UK and US politicians actually explicitly mentioned that treaty, because in my opinion that is set in stone, and we must honor it. No emotion or heart-string-tugging, but instead honouring what was agreed. Great video mate. I've always liked the Chally, just hope we can ship out more. The thing about American support for Ukraine seeming so flip-floppy (and more specifically that of House Republicans) is the fact that House Republicans specifically are kind of split right now in ideology. One side who call themselves the "Freedom Caucus" is much more focused on what Trump talks more about like local social/religious issues and isolationism (or "putting America first" as they call it) than any other thing that has historically concerned Republicans. This means that in order to get anything passed in the House of Representatives, the technical majority party (Republicans) have to make deals not only with the Democrats who are the only other party with power in the country and would naturally be opposed to most Republican policies, but also the Freedom Caucus who outright refuse to compromise for their ideals. Practically nothing worthwhile had been passed in the House in the half a year prior to this one funding bill because of constant infighting and delays.

Former EOD tech here. The HESH round (high explosive squash head) works by hitting a target and literally squashing spreading out before detonating. The shock wave travels through the target and breaks off internal parts of the bunker/ armor causing “spalling”, lethal particles of your own armor bouncing around inside your vehicle. Also rifling is detrimental to HEAT (high explosive anti-tank) rounds because the centrifugal force interferes with the plasma jet formation in HEAT warheads. Disclaimer, as an American I still think the Challenger is a beastly vehicle, no tanks are indestructible as we can see of some Abrams being taken out by drones in Ukraine recently.
@voidtempering8700
@voidtempering8700 20 күн бұрын
The issue is that the HESH is useless against almost any tank with basic composite armor. It literally wouldn't work on a T-62m or T-72a, let alone any more modern T-72.

@@voidtempering8700 Very true, the ERA does mitigate the shockwave and composite armor also breaks up the shockwave as it passes through the armor. Chieftain did a video on Challenger 2 a while ago (was a weird one - some lady from Wargaming was with him for it) and one of the more interesting observations he made was that the most genius thing about it from his perspective was the gunner's controls - they're basically a playstation controller on the end of a solid bar welded to the turret body. Compare and contrast this with the joysticks of the M1 - on the move, over rough ground, the gunner in the Abrams has got his work cut out for him holding the aimpoint steady as his whole body, arm and hand get jogged around, but the Challenger? He just has to hold firmly onto that controller, and his thumbs are held steady, making it *far* easier to hold the aimpoint on target. He also said that while he would prefer his M1, he wouldn't feel uncomfortable going to war in a Challenger 2 - which for any professional tanker, especially an american one, is basically as high as praise gets.

True and it seemed like Ukraine was among the few to realize there would be no war ending lightning advances without total air superiority. In fact I'd go one step further and suggest that the especially methodical advance with frequent long defensive pauses we saw even before the conservative circus interrupted US aid signals that they wouldn't necessarily pursue a fast resolution to this conflict even if they could. History makes it clear that Russia is just going to attack again in five or ten years anyway. The only realistic remedy might be to inflict a WW1 style Lost Generation in Russia that makes it impractical for them to go on the offensive again in the next twenty or thirty years. In the meantime Russia is almost exclusively tied to rail lines limiting their paths to advance. I suspect this underlies a lot of what may seem unnecessarily slow progress for Ukrainian forces.

You are aware that operating under air and artillery superiority is how tanks SHOULD operate? War in Ukraine show how relying only on Tanks like in video game, would end with horrible looses. Just wanna shine a little light on American perspectives. I think it’s pretty sweet that we neutered the Russian military for a relatively cheap price. However, domestically I think the US has MASSIVE issues that we need to address. I stand with the people who want freedom in Ukraine but unfortunately the US is in economic disaster right now. Housing is a pipe dream for most Americans. Gas and energy prices are through the roof and it’s not even summer time yet. Food costs have nearly doubled and the inflation is out of control. Not to mention the humanitarian crisis on the Mexican border with an rough ballpark of 16 million or so people coming over. Bottom line is we can’t afford it. The US is broke. Our politicians here do NOT care about the average American and instead send money overseas. That’s why there is so much resentment towards aid packages. It feels like we’re helping others while our own citizens struggle. I’m glad the EU is finally taking a stand and actually trying to meet their NATO commitments for GDP spending. It’s about time. The US is strong but the economy and internal issues right now are making it hard for us to want to back any proxy wars.
