The last line of the movie is what makes this such a legendary flick. Its up to interpretation weather u think he is fully there or not. But most would wager he understands, but would rather "die a good man" and be lobotomized, so he doesnt have to live as a "monster" and doesnt have to live with what he did

When the "RUN"-lady is being interviewed and Leonardo asks her to describe Doctor Sheenan, she shyly glances at Chuck-Hulk and says, "Well, he's easy on the eyes." It's a nice touch that you wouldn't really understand unless you already knew that he was actually Sheenan.

Yes, Leo chose to be lobotomized. What Leo saw at Dachau concentration camp screwed him up. That’s why he worked so much & was away from home all the time. His wife had serious mental health issues but he never listened. He felt a duty to save as many people as possible. So when she killed their children, Leo lost it & killed her. In the end, Leo’s character consciously chose to die a good man. To be honest, that’s truly what he was. Honestly, I wouldn’t want to live knowing I never listened to my wife & wasn’t there to protect my kids when they needed it the most. That would screw me up forever. I’d choose a lobotomy too.

This movie was a total mindf*ck. Now imagine watching this for the first time ever on DVD that was rented, in a DVD player that was malfunctioning and I didn't realize it, as it randomly played movie chapters out of order, and repeated some chapters at the most confusing times. By the time I figured out what was happening I had concluded that perhaps I needed to visit the lighthouse myself.

There were two crazy moments at the end. The first was when we all realized he was a patient playing in his fantasy world and the second one was him accepting reality, but pretending to still act like the marshal knowing full well that it would end with him being lobotomized.

“I was about to say he took them bullets like a champ.” 😂 This twist was amazing. I was so happy when someone created a film on the perspective of a patient who was suffering from a mental illness. As a person who had ppd and has a brother who suffers from schizophrenia most people don’t realize that sometimes people like this have no self control and that their delusions seem so real that you can’t tell the difference. Sadly we can become victims of our own minds and illness. This film was perfection. Loved this reaction.

The story of his wife is so heartbreaking. There was a women earlier this year who... her kids and then jumped out a window. She had been suffering from ppd and her husband had been desperately trying to get her help. Her husband forgave her and asked the public to forgive her as well. The system failed them, and most women with ppd. Louis Theroux has a great special called Mothers on the Edge. I highly recommend for anyone interested. Great reaction as usual! The "shut the f*ck up" gets me every time 😂

@@e.c.1975 KZbin's algorithm keeps censoring, so let me just say this. Protecting people from the mentally deranged should come before making sure the mentally deranged lead a normal life. Fuck them. Fuck her. I care more about the kids she drowned than her issues. If she were permanently locked away or dead those kids would be alive. Yes, I know it's a movie, however, real life corroborates my view. A man that was known to be mentally deranged just last week murdered his kids, then his wife, then killed himself. He was known to be mentally ill and people begged for him to be locked up. His precious rights were more important than the vulnerable being protected from him.

Martin Scorsese is the kind of director who can pretty much make any kind of film. When this came out, a lot of critics thought it was a "lesser" film in the grand scheme of Scorsese's legendary filmography, but a film like this showed that he wasn't really interested in being a "prestige" director, but one who can use their inherent talent for a story that aims to ENTERTAIN as well as make you think. Shutter Island is a fantastic piece of work, and is another example of how easy Uncle Marty makes it look ❤

Brilliant movie. When he was talking about it's time to get the Ferry back, and then he asks where is partner is, and he says what partner? You don't have a partner. And then 'tell me more about this partner'. It sounds like a professional asking him to speak on his delusions. At this point, I thought they were pretending Teddy wasn't real, for the purpose of being able to frame Daniels as crazy. So it was clever of him to pick up on it, and respond by acknowledging he doesn't have a partner (agreeing with their stated stance). In the Lighthouse, I thought they were still trying to pull the same thing, to essentially trick the world into him becoming a patient there, so that he couldn't expose things/whistle blow on the outside. Once he showed 'the rule of 4', though, and the anagrams, I instantly was 100% convinced the doctor was being honest, and everything clicked. It was just too impossibly good of a coincidence for it to be a ploy. And then in hindsight, all those little hints added up, that initially steered things another way. The duality that works convincingly in both contexts is so good. The withdrawal effects from not taking the pills, mixed with you thinking the pills are responsible for the effects, and add to the pills being used to help with their ulterior, sinister plot, when really it's just his psychiatric meds, which is another hint for the truth... So many cases of that.

Lobotomies were once the big thing in psychiatry, that and electro-convulsive therapy. I knew a couple of people who got ECT back in the day. I was a kid and they were adults, but even so I could tell somehing wasn't right with them afterwards. Both procedures were essentially banned, but they do seem to be trying to get ECT back for some cases. Also when I was a kid there was a state mental institution just outside of town. Back then it was full up and had a criminal ward as well. A cousin of mine was studying to be a nurse and to do a rotation in there. It essentially was a prison with guards, bars, buzzing doors, and all. It was so bad in there that I don't think she finished the rotation. Many didn't.
