What's crazy is that not only does Leo break down as he learns the truth, but so do we the audience. As the protagonist, we trust that everything he sees and hears is true, but this movie takes that a brilliantly betrays that. I don't think Mark Ruffalo got enough credit for his performance here. He's a truly talented. You guys outta put Zodiac on your list.

Is that called the "unreliable narrator" or is that something else entirely? Added Zodiac👍

@@RamblersIncThat's right. Great call. It's actually a feature of a lot of movies recently. Just because we are following the story and learning along with the main character, it doesn't mean s/he is the best source. 🙂

One of the best reactions and you included all the key scenes! This is one of those movies that's confusing the first time you watch it but when you watch it the second time, everything starts to make sense and you're able to connect things together that completely went over your head the first time. Such an incredible movie.

I do love the dream imagery in this film. We're all used to our own dreams being weird and disconnected, but it isn't something that's typically shown on screen that faithfully. It was as gorgeous as it was disturbing.

I always wondered if it was a hidden case of DID. He created that “character” because he couldn’t handle what he did. That last line asking if it’s better to live as a monster, or die as a good man was his alter making that choice, taking the burden off of Andrew.

Oooooh that's a better way of looking at it. I think that makes the final line make more sense.

He decided to choose lobotomy to kill the monster he thought of himself for not getting his wife treatment when she needed it and asked for it. To him that’s what made him into a monster that he didn’t help his wife and in result she drowned their children as a final plead for help. He wanted it all to end no more loops

I can't stop thinking about that quote at the end. It's a good way to let us know that he didn't regress, but..... he wouldn't be dying as a good man right? He's be dying as a monster?
@paul89512

Lobotomy doesn’t necessarily mean death. He is hoping to erase the monster and become a good man. So when he eventually dies, he will die as a good man.

A big-time inversion film which, thanks to Scorcese, spreads throughout the movie-verse. Yin) Teddy's remark about his wife dying by smoke (suffocating) vs fire (burning). Yang) Teddy submitting to his madness in the end to be free (Lobotomy) vs remaining psychologically imprisoned the rest of his days.

His guilt was too intense about not saving his wife and children so he saw himself as a villain. In the end he didn't regress he accepted reality and decided he can not live life knowing what he knows so he pretended he regressed to stop his suffering.

The single most powerfully hidden aspect of Shutter Island lies in one of it's stars...Mark Ruffalo. A film that deals with a man suffering from a severe split-personality disorder, is best served in having the ultimate monster-ego portray the primary caregiver of this victim of such an identity crisis. "Paging Dr Hulk, to the Lighthouse STAT!!"

Great film and reaction . I think you did a god job of understanding the film , you are supposed to be confused and have to think about it. I assume he knew and just wanted to end the cycle so accepted being lobotomised . I can understand him wanting to end his mental suffering as well as being a danger to others. On a re-watch you see lots of clues , especially how the other patients and the staff react to him
