Shuttlebus conversion - Episode 14 - Building an Insulated Box for a Window A/C Unit!

Today, I’m building an insulated box with drainage to hold a window a/c unit! This is the smallest unit I could find, and I know I’ll only be able to run it a few hours per day, or if I’m on shore power, but I feel that it’s worth having. This was made with recycled materials and stuff I had in the garage (except for the drain line). Thanks so much for watching, like and subscribe if you want to follow our journey!

I had my Ex install a windows fan in my van. But we did build a box for it. It is supported by a a piece of plywood he cut a hole out for the a/c then placed metal bracket on the sides and bottom. It's drilled into my rear door & sealed with marine sealant. 3 years and no leaks yet. ( I FOLLOWED CAMPERVAN CORY STRANGZ METHOD OF INSTALLING MY A/C.) IT works on shore power only though.

That back vent is not rated for outdoor use. Hopefully it will keep the rain out. One other thing, I suggest you pull the vent out and glue a bug screen to it and reinstall. That will keep the wasps from building a nest in there.

Great idea about the bug screen! I have some in the garage and will definitely add it (although I can’t imagine the wasps will be comfortable with the 116° coming out of that vent!) As for the rain, the worst case is that the water would drain back through the hot grate into the unit, out through the relief hole and into the moat. The whole area is well taped to the point where I have no concerns about water getting behind the wall. The a/c unit was originally designed for the condensation to just overflow through the back grate anyway (which is why I had to drill the hole to direct the water where I want it to go) so there’s no possibility of harm coming to the unit from a little water. Nice custom fabrication! How did you choose that particular A/C unit? My shuttle is the same size as yours and I need a similar type of unit to operate on shore power. Any recommendations? Thanks, John.

I basically looked up the smallest ac units you could get, that took the least power/had the least BTUs, and I knew I wanted one with a digital readout. That was my criteria, yours may be different. Cheers!
