Flatbush Cats

Күн бұрын

I found this cat outside, biting into garbage bags and searching for food. He was confused and wary - not sure who to trust. We’ve never seen each other before this moment - and he doesn’t realize it yet, but as you will soon see - we already have a deep connection. This is Junior's story.
Thank you for making this work possible. To join us as a monthly supporter: donate.flatbus...

Congratulations. You'll probably never be out of a job now. LOL. It is wonderful to hear your story. I have 2 strays (always strays), but I have never been able to foster because of working and I live now semi-retired in Scandinavia and there aren't so many stray cats in this part of the world. Just as well maybe because just having the two costs a fortune up here and my pension is not top end.

Here's a tip I rarely see mentioned, but worked WONDERS for me with two 5-6 month old kittens born from a mostly feral farm cat. I kept them in a room, just large enough to fit a madras and a kitten hidy hole. And I slept there. Sleeping next to anyone is a HUGE sign of trust, falling into a deep sleep with them nearby told them I trusted them not to eat me.(Not that they could eat me) And showed I had no interest in harming them. Also, make sure they see you coming with the food and giving it to them. Makes it very easy for them to understand your giving them food, this isn't food they found. And I wish you the best of luck Oayah!

Something even experienced fosters need to be reminded of - sometimes you don't choose the cat, the cat chooses you. After years of fostering cats with success, I came across a lovely little mama who stuck to me like glue. When I really started to feel conflicted, my beloved old man passed away and made the decision for me. It's like he was waiting for someone who could boss me around as much as he did. The cat distribution service strikes again.

Years ago, I watched a video about a pet psychic. I am a pretty firm, closed off sceptic. But this lady hypnotised me with the sense of relief, being around her (I know, go figure right,) and she said amongst many truisms that cats don't like to pass on without organising a replacement for themselves in the future. Or once they pass, they will spend six months to a year organising a replacement for their humans as they are very sensitive about their humans' grief. If their humans choose not to take the replacement on, not a problem... but they've done their job. Very fussy about it they are.

It's such a tough situation. I've fostered over a hundred kittens, and have managed not to keep them, but the seniors are so much harder to pass on once they get used to your house. It feels like you're betraying them. Sometimes, they just need to stay!

I have a a couple that I just had to keep. One was the sole survivor of a litter dumped behind a store in a plastic tub. He constantly bit every one and everything. By the time I got him to stop (he still likes to chew up cardboard) the rescue was swamped with more kittens and he was "too old". Another one got pulled from a PetSmart in cardiac failure. Two vets swore he was about to die. But he didn't. In fact he no longer takes meds and is enjoying a healthy middle age. Now I have two kittens in foster everyone swore were 6 to 8 weeks but they were very wild. No way were they that young, they were closer to 12 to 14 and it's taking forever to tame them.

@@angelachouinard4581 Cats tame when they're ready. I saved a litter of 5 last June and the last one went to his new home yesterday. Sometimes they just have their own schedule. He benefited from hanging out with one of my senior guys after his siblings left. That calmed him down a lot. The 16 year old enjoyed it too. I think I'm going to put my new ones in with him part time since it went so well.

The idea of my cats flinching is truly upsetting. My two are litter brothers, in fact they are the entire litter. They do mutual grooming which usually ends in a tussle but never an out and out fight. They both have their 'safe place' to get away from the other or they come to me for protection. This video has the makings of a Disney movie.

We've fostered a lot of cats over the past 20 years. The most rewarding ones are the ones that have been abandoned and are scared. It's so good to see them coming out of their shells and learning to trust again. The only trouble is they're also the hardest ones to say goodbye to when they're adopted.

Respect and admiration from a random Australian. Thank you for all your work, and for educating people on how to care. I wish I could foster, but I am just too far away from my "local" shelter. Have recently adopted 5 year old bro and sis. They were taken by the inspectors - so you know they have had a bad time. So many breakthroughs as they learn to trust me. It is really special. * three hour drive each way would not be good for them.

Your dedication is admirable. I especially like the statement toward the end where you say you're not just committed to rescuing cats but also to preventing other cats from needing to be rescued. There are simply too many dogs and cats in our world, and as an example, the LA shelters are euthanizing many animals they can't place quickly and keeping others in poor conditions without daily attention or walking, etc. That's a sign of shelters being overloaded and the demand not being great enough to make homes for many of the rescued or placed animals. If shelters, rescue entities and organizations like the ASPCA must place greater emphasis on spay and neuter processes for current pet owners. I'd welcome thoughts and feedback from others on this crisis.

Where I live in Montreal, like elsewhere except possibly Istanbul, most feral cats are unapproachable, but not so much the lost ones. No matter how often you feed them or you try to make their feeding experience a positive one, most fear humans. People who care, walk by as I feed them and ask me questions, but after going on almost two years of my daily care, no one has offered to join me in their care. There are few things as rewarding as seeing the face of an starving animal, when food is placed in front of them. The SPCA here, has enough to deal here with and will not help feral cats, even when they are injured. How sad is that. I set up a security cam on the floor of my balcony and plates of cat food to keep track of local who's who and who's lost. If the cat visits are routine, I post them online to help them get home. I'm out there every day to feed and help them. I haven't missed a day feeding them at sunset since June 2022. Once you begin helping these fur balls or any creature in need of help, get attached and you know their life is in your hands, your day is not complete until you know they are fed and you've done what you can...

When the mysterious cat distribution network decides you need a cat. You can't argue it lol. I had the same dilemma November 1st. I've had my rescue cat, Furby, for 9 yrs going on 10 next yr. Didn't plan on another cat. Leading up to November. All any algorithm would send my way was videos of black cats & adopt one today. I get to work the day after Halloween at my Lowe's job. & a tiger striped kitten & a black kitten was dumped via raccoon trap in curbside. One lady took the tiger stripe & I relented to the universe & took the little void kitten lol. So now I have a Furby & a Curby(short for curbside). Both are thick as thieves. You win again cat distribution network, & I'm glad you did, both times 💖
