On 19 March 1987, a group posing as Central Bureau of Investigation officers executed a fake income tax investigation raid on the Opera House branch of Tribhovandas Bhimji Zaveri & Sons Jewellers in Bombay (present-day Mumbai), India.
This case has remained unsolved.
Khel..A 1992 Hindi film had a small heist sequence inspired by this incident.
Special 26 - A Bollywood film, directed by Neeraj Pandey, is based on the heist. The movie was remade in Tamil as Thaanaa Serndha Koottam in Tamil.
The Sailkot Saga - A book by Ashwin Sanghi has referenced the heist, too

"ദി ഡെയിലി" എന്ന ബോംബെ പേപ്പറിൽ ഈ വാർത്ത വന്നത് കണ്ടു. അതു മാത്രമല്ല ജ്വവല്ലറി സ്വന്തമായി ഈ കള്ളനെക്കുറിച്ച് വിവരം നൽകുന്നവർക്ക് ഒരു ലക്ഷം രൂപ ഇനാമായും പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചിരുന്നു (അന്നത്തെ 1 ലക്ഷം ഇന്ന് എത്രയോ വലുത്). അന്ന് മറാഠികളും, മറ്റു ദേശക്കാരും പറയുമായിരുന്നു - മദ്രാസിക്ക് ഭയങ്കര ബുദ്ധിയാണന്ന്. ഇന്നുവരെ ആ കള്ളനെ പിടിക്കുവാൻ സാധിച്ചിട്ടില്ല.

It was interesting to listen to the infamous heist which has been carried out in the most intelligent way with utmost precision by a person with out leaving any evidence for the police to nab him. The concerned person involved in the crime must have worked on this operation for many months before being carried out. He must have spend sleep less nights to plan and prepare himself ready for a robbery of this magnitude. A single handed operation for which he just took the help of some unknown persons and they simply followed his instructions with out really knowing the motive behind it. At least for a couple of hours they were all belonging to a fake CBI team , as the leader of the team ( Mohansingh) could carry out the robbery most intelligently with out leaving any doubts in the minds of those who were present in the jewellery shop. A well planned robbery in which the " robbers" did not really were unaware of what they are involved in as the man has made use of the "services " of over 2 dozens of "security officers" by using his brain and he succeeded well to hoodwink every one including the Police. March 18th 1987 belonged to "Mohansingh" as everything worked well in his favour. He dramatically disappeared from the scene of crime with out leaving an iota of doubt in the minds of others. Lady luck also was in his favour. Mumbai police worked hard to nab him, but was unsuccessful. Even after three decades, the case still remains unsolved !
