it broke my heart to hear Bob say that he is afraid that if and when he has children how much of his dad is inside of him and he never wants to hurt his children the way his dad hurt him. and honestly that was *MY* fear ab having kids. but when i had my daughter i vowed then that regardless what happened i would always be in her life bc my father was never in my life. Mind you this man has several other mixed race children with a white woman whom he claims and father’s but i’ve never known him. and even tho the mother of my daughter and i aren’t together i have been in my kids life from *day ONE* and will never not be there for her. i just can’t do that. it hurt me so much, growing up a single child with a single parent who worked her ass off to provide for me, i had loving grandparents and my uncles were great but i never had someone to call _DAD_ and i could *NEVER* do that to my child! i *WILL* never do that to her!!!

I'm spiritual but organized religion seems so toxic to me. and I'd never encourage my children to take part in it although I know I can't completely control them. The discussion about religion and having a religious partner is very interesting. I am Swedish, gay, and non-religious but my boyfriend is a Christian (which is less common in Sweden than in the US, many of us are non-believers). However, the Swedish church is one of the most progressive and left-leaning churches in the world, and my boyfriend's take on Christian doctrine means that he and I have the same political views (leftist). To me, religion is still something I do no believe in, since I feel it cheapens the true mysteries of the universe by projecting man-made tradition and philosophy upon the unknown, but since his and my beliefs when it comes to tolerance, economy, etcetera, are the same it is basically not a problem. He just does his thing with that, and I do mine. I should also add that I'm an ancient historian with a speciality in mythology/religion and ritual, so my non-belief is based on very extensive knowledge about religious tradition.

I have very close to similar experiences with them both. I wasn't raised by my parents. I was old enough to remember the day my parents gave up their rights to me. It was very painful growing up and never knowing when Mother's Day is or Father's Day. Things you want parents for. A lot of damage was done and I'm barely getting through all the stuff I had to put away because of them.

I will say, my parents where never married or together throughout my life. I've always had a rough relationship with my father but not because of my mother. My mother made a point to make my father a part of my life and she never bad mouthed him. My mom always figured that any of my fathers flaws I would find out for myself and she didn't want to be the reason that I didn't know who my father was.
