On 3rd Outback. 2 over 200,000 miles with no issues 21 with almost 100k already. I feel the outback rides better and is quieter. Plus I like the longer cargo area. Average over 33mpg. Always almost 600 miles to a tank is awesome for traveling.

Viewer Tip: When reviewing a car like a Forester (or any Subaru or AWD vehicle).. The reviewer should always say: "I'm 5'10"." Then get into the back cargo area and lay down and sit up (if possible). There are a ton of us who consider these vehicles for car camping. It'd be nice to get a sense of how that feels.

Bring the Turbo XT engine back to Forrester!
@scottanthony34263 ай бұрын
Yup. I have a '14 and am looking for an eventual replacement. (I say "eventual" because nothing has quite hit the spot on other SUV's I've been trying out.) The modern XT Outback is not the old Forester XT in an Outback body. In addition to the 250 HP turbo 2L, the Forester XT included bigger wheels/tires, bigger brakes, a sportier suspension, and special XT front fascia. It has "sport" and "sport sharp" buttons on the steering wheel, to easily access those modes. While the current Outback XT uses the 2.4 L and puts out a little more power than my 2L, Outbacks are about 400 lbs heavier than Foresters. They did NOTHING to improve the suspension on the Outback XT's vs the regular 2.5L Outback. And, there is only a single sport mode, which is buried 2 screens deep on the clunky user interface touch screen. I was disappointed when I drove it, and didn't feel like the penalty in gas mileage was worth the cost, given the underwhelming performance and features. And BTW, Car Confections kind of glossed over the acceleration, but IMO, the 2.5 in the Forester is barely "adequate". It is fine around town, but once you need to accelerate past 50, it really shows its lack of punch. In the heavier Outback, it's even worse, and something I definitely felt. (I drove a '24 Forester 2.5 back-to-back with both Outback drivetrains on the exact same route.) I hope the hybrid packs a little more punch. I can tolerate my next one not being quite as quick as my XT (especially if the mpg is significantly better), but I could not see having another 10 year relationship with a Forester that is packing the wheezy 2.5L drivetrain. Toyota has managed to make the RAV4 hybrid accelerate better than their gas only RAV 4, so I hope Subaru follows suit. It will be interesting to see what the hybrid is, and how they manage it with the Symmetrical AWD. The old Crosstrek hybrid was really mild and provided very minimal benefit.

Hi ya - I enjoyed this comparison, however, comparing the 25 Forester Touring to a 24 Outback Premium might not be a fair comparison. The 25 Outback (when it is released) might also have all the same features as the Forester for which you gave the extra points. IMO, you should have waited until the 25 Outback was released and do a true comparison between the 25 Outback Touring to the 25 Forester Touring. Having said that, I currently own a 23 Legacy Touring XT and have a 24 BRZ tS being delivered in August. The BRZ will be my 10th Subaru having previously purchased 2 Foresters, 5 Outbacks, and 2 Legacys. I'm kinda 'sold' on Subaru. Thanks for this comparison - stay safe and healthy!

I bought a slightly used 2023 Subaru Outback touring XT 3 months ago. Three big things that I wanted that the Forester didn't have, was the updated infotainment with wireless play, the turbo and ventilated seats. The new Forester takes care of two of those things, which is why I believe we will be trading in my wife's old Nissan Rogue SUV for the new Forester next year, possibly a hybrid model.

I chose the Outback and three years later I am very happy. I got the Limited with the 2.5 and I am averaging 31.1 mpg real world driving. My Subaru Outback is the first time I could afford a luxury car. I know Volvo owners will not like that. 1997 was the last time I bought a new car so I did a lot of comparison shopping. I chose it over the Honda CRV. Incidentally my daughter chose the CRV. I also chose the Subaru over Nissan Rogue, Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX5, and the Volvo CX60

One reason not to buy any of Subaru's current model, based on my experience as an owner of a 2024 Outback and 2019 Forester, is the 12-inch touch screen that controls almost everything. Touch screens rely entirely on sight, making it nearly impossible to build muscle memory like with physical controls. They're often slow and require taking eyes off the road, increasing the risk of accidents. Using them often requires taking your eyes off the road or constantly shifting your focus between the screen and the road Carmakers are willingly ignoring the fact that things can go south in a blink of an eye. Tech is good but it has to be implemented in such a way that controls are accessible and purpose fit. I will reiterate: touch screens lack tactile feedback and rely entirely on sight and you either have to constantly shift focus between the road and the screen or stare at the screen which is clearly not fit for purpose nor accessible. Also the position is seated far below the driver's line of sight which increases the driver's response time when operating the touch screen. In a UI/UX perspective, Subaru and automakers who do the same thing will earn a failing grade. More on this is how bad the implementation of AC controls are and I can summarize it like this: cramped and buried. Cramped on a tiny portion of the screen and buried the remaining controls under menus. Remember, things can go south in a blink of an eye. If you chose a trim that has the driver monitoring system, it will scream at you for fumbling on the screen which is them sort of penalizing you for how bad they have implemented things.

Otherwise, loved this car!
