My understanding of the fine floss after the sponges but before the noodles is that it traps most of the gunk (including the fine particle stuff) in the sponges due to how fine the floss is, which means it is mostly gunk-free polished water entering the noodle chambers which helps keep the noodles gunk free for maximum beneficial bacteria (bb) load, however adding the fine floss after the noodles risks trapping all the fine muck in with the noodles & reducing their capacity to hold bb. However I've seen people set up canisters in all sorts of different ways that seem to work for their specific setups really well regardless of what the 'best' way to do it is supposed to be, so if nothing else you'll be able to compare the 2 filters after X number of weeks running & decide which way if either works better for you or if there are any noticeable differences, etc. which is always interesting IMO.

You have raised an interesting point that I had not taken into account. It would be especially important with new tanks and maybe a high loading. Perhaps with mature tanks, the bacteria established in the tank itself would help offset any loss of capacity as the filter clogs up with time. To cutback on full cleanouts I like the idea of popping the top, cleaning the top floss and this gives an opportunity to see the condition of the media. These filters are easy to access as no unscrewing of hoses and no water spills. I will see how it works out. As you say, there is no right or wrong way but it is interesting to see how other people do it... thanks for the information.

Was the 1400 easy to set up? I just bought one and no matter how hard I've tried it just won't work. I have filled it with water and primed it and pumps fine with the primer but when trying with it plugged in it doesn't work, very loud sound from the impeller

Mine is running great. Noise might mean that water level has not reached the impeller. Turn power off and raise the orange lever to seal the hose openings then the white lever to remove the hose connections. Check to see if the water has reached the top of the canister if not then top it up as the priming may not have worked. Connect up again, try the priming plunger and then power on. Hopefully it will run, if so then a gentle shake or bump will help dislodge bubbles trapped by the media. If still not working then check the impeller or return to the shop. I hppe the New Year will improve for you!
