I have been doing some reading about the biography and the history of Africa. The title of the book is called: Africa: A Biography of the Continent. by John Reader. The books talks about sickle cell anemia while discussing the climate conditions of Africa. One of the major climate conditions that have faced Africa for over thousands of years as part of its climate are the harsh conditions of many parts of Africa where farming, drought, and diseases takes place such as the tsetse fly and malaria caused by mosquito bites that has affected the people that lives in many parts of Africa for thousands of years. As many people probably know, sickle-cell anaemia is developed in people who have developed an immunity towards malaria in Africa. Someone who does not have this immunity would get malaria while those who have developed the natural antibodies wont. Those who have developed these antibodies are the carriers of the sickle-cell trait. So there is a good side and a plus side for the sickle-cell trait. The plus side is that if a person is bitten by a mosquito, they won't get malaria since their bodies have developed these antibodies against malaria. On the other hand, these people who has these antibodies can develop sickle-cell anemia, a debilitating disease. Sickle-cell anemia is very common among people of African decent here in America, and I have always wondered as a child what was the cause of it.

This is an interesting topic Lamide..........sickle cell is a very bad disease...their is little love and information about the genetic disease because victims are always neglected......I think government should definitely do something to help people having sickle cell eg making services free and available for patients

People with sickle cell can have a good life if the health care system in Nigeria improves. There is no reason why someone with sickle cell can't have children or get married. We need more education on how to prevent or manage it. Families who already have children with chronic diseases or any sort of disability needs support from the state and churches. Oh guys don't get me started. Love is not enough, we need education and support as well. Keep creating awareness guys, well done👌🏾
