I've cut down a poor crop of corn for a neighbor with a old versatile 400 15 foot swather. Doesn't knock it down because you can lift the reel. He then round baled it and wrapped it. Not ideal but it worked. Thanks for the video.
@lukestrawwalker2 жыл бұрын
Do what ya gotta do. Just be careful in drought stressed corn... if it had plenty of fertilizer applied for a "normal crop" it can have excess nitrates which can kill cattle-- eating high nitrate corn will dissolve the nitrates in their blood, where it binds up the ability of the hemoglobin to pick up oxygen and carry it to the body... cows get labored breathing and lay down or collapse and can die from asphyxia. Their blood will look like chocolate milk due to the lack of oxygen in the blood. Nitrates are unaffected by curing for dry hay (or even concentrated further as moisture evaporates from the plants) nor is it reduced by fermentation as silage either in the wrapped bale or silo, and it doesn't dissipate over time. Only way to know is have the forage lab tested and then if it's high nitrate, mix accordingly with straw or poor quality hay to "dilute" the nitrates down to safe levels for the animals to eat. Best way is to bale process it in that case with a tub grinder. Back in the killer drought we had in 1996 and again in 2011, a lot of farmers across central and south Texas had poor corn and grain sorghum crops that didn't produce enough to bother combining for grain, at the same time ranchers were short on hay, and a lot of guys started baling the crops for hay. Some guys lost cows to nitrate poisoning and so the Extension service put out the word to be sure and get any failed crop hay tested for nitrates and how to spot problems in the cattle, and how to address the problem of high nitrate feeds. Later! OL J R :)

I love your stubborn Dad, crack the whip Jacob and make him take time to heal. You always do a fine job getting what needs doing done! Maybe let him do some filming, just strap a camera to him and hit the record button. If he still refuses at least put a wheel spinner on the steering wheel, I love you all on your farm and I pray Dad Boehm listens to common sense so he will come back better than ever rather than suffering in pain the rest of his life. Please stay safe and be safe 😷!

I think I know why he is cutting high. It has to do with the lower stalks having less food value and the animals not liking it as much. Same with us with asparagus.
@lukestrawwalker2 жыл бұрын
True but cutting higher you're not losing that much, it looked like it was feeding better, and cutting high greatly reduces the chances of picking up a rock and feeding it through the chopper... Later! OL J R :)
