You've helped me so much in helping me figure out that DEF doesnt have to be crazy and i was going about the way i was building into my decendents correctly. I was trying to get HP and Shields as much as I could and didn't know the values of DEF so i wasnt sure if i needed to increase it more or not. Been running health over defense. It's honestly sad to see that a speedsheet warrior claims defense is better, and people just believe him because he drew numbers on a dry-erase board. Ty for educating the community. Run health as much as you can. Then maybe add some defense if available. But never add defense OVER health

Odd test specifically standing in poison, of which status ticks (poison, burn, electricute), DEF doesn't protect against those. Physical attacks and the like (being actually shot or hit) is what DEF is lowering. While I agree that HP and Shields is amazing, the test itself is not a good showcase other than to show how DEF doesn't help against Status DoT's.

i'm in your camp... defense SHOULD be decent but even with any flaws in the testing running a couple defense mods, it SHOULD be obviously better... there should be an obvious difference the fact that it's hard to tell... and the fact that even if you say the test is inconclusive (which it may be), it DOES show that there's nothing obvious about the effect of defense like that's a mod slot... it should be clearly obvious that that mod slot is making you take less damage, and helping you live longer and it does not against my insticts and math it's pretty apparent that it doesn't justify itself for a mod slot maybe it's a bug, maybe the enemies are too good at removing or ignoring defense, or status tics are too stronk/prevalent in any case, i think i'm at least dialing back my investment in def

The defense stat is not being applied when you take poison damage, only when the impact of the projectiles hit you, which makes it less reliable overall, better to have a big health/shield pool that it will cover any kind of damage. I still believe that having around 8k to 16k defense is a nice plus, but by looking at this I wouldn't mind not building it at all and just have the component substat. There are modules that reduce incoming damage and even Crit hits from enemies, maybe those could be more reliable overall than defense.

Based on my own gameplay, what i found to be the most survivable is splitting a 100% of your defences into about 60% hp, 20% def and 20% shield seems to work best for me. You can try to push these numbers by about 5-10% and see what works for you character.

My buddy I play with doesn’t run resistances or defense, just health and he is way tanker than anyone I’ve seen. You’re just confirming this. I started making descendants with no defense and I’m staying alive just as good as before with an extra module slot now.

Problem is that Hard Bosses do more status damage than in Normal, Defense only help(and not by much) with raw damage. All of us should be on that HP hype train by now 😂

ya man, even for the nay-sayer... you have to admit at the very least that the defense didn't seem to make much difference even if someone says "that's inconclusive" ... ok, but it was basically no evidence of defense doing much so ya, you definitely have a point maybe the issue is enemies are way too good at lowering our defense or some kind of bug that needs to get fixed but ya, at the very least it's pretty clear defense isn't helping much,,, and it's a mod slot which is a big deal

From my observations, like you said, 8k-12k def is all you really need for most characters. However, Gley, and more specifically Ajax benefit more from def than other characters, though gley not as much as ajax. Ajax however, does infact need to stack as much def as possible, not so much for def itself, but because depending on his build, his skills literally can scale off of how much def he has. So its not so much for actual def as it is just boosting his skill effectiveness. And for gley, i literally only run An iron will on her, where when shields are at 0, def is boosted by 128.3%, which since she has no shields, that is always proc'd. Then just stack health on her after that. All other characters I mainly just stack 1-2 health mods, except enzo, for him I stack 1 shield mod too. My experience so far...i have to pick up a lot randoms for how often they go down..while tanking a bosses attacks..

I dont know how people think defense is better. It has dimininish returns. Its just pure math or common sense. Doubling your HP makes you double as tanky. Doubling your defense is a 10% effective HP increase and not a 100% like double HP. Even shield is better effective HP better than too much defense. Simply Shield recovers on its own so its like having additional HP multiple times

I've subbed to your channel when i saw your bunny build video, your approach and vision of the game is very unique, unlike those click bait videos around that show the same thing, i have noticed a couple mods that reduces incoming critical hits, since this is not a PvP game i was wondering if the mobs attacks are critical based, like in some games i know, could this be useful somehow? would love to see your take on this.

I'm so glad I looked around YT while figuring out how to optimize my builds. I almost invested in 50k defense because "It's optimal." Now, I have two HP modules on most of my descendants, and I'm always the last one standing. I'm guessing there are still so many "skeptics" because of the Sunk Cost Fallacy. They imprinted Rutile modules on their characters and wanted to so desperately convince themselves that they don't have to go farm more catalysts to change them into Cerulean.

Just look into how Gley is played, no shield, lots of hp and DEF, she stays up much more than most characters. I created a glass cannon build for Freyna with overwhelming hp and hella DEF. I also use walk a tight rope and HP collector, I typically am the one staying up the most unless im the only player up and the colossi is aggroing me. The entire shield vs hp vs DEF is stupid at this point. DEF helps damage reduction on incoming damage. HP doesn't help necessarily against dots cause the more you have, the higher the percentage the dot takes away. Have a resistance against that dot meants its still damage reduction. Having a lot of HP is cute, but just catering to that over not getting DEF is oddly stupid. Both are good, but DEF is more important to have whenever you spec into HP. Shields only are good if youre Kyle lmao

He never said that. He said the point at which he started seeing high diminishing returns was after 40-50k. Even then he said that you shouldn’t be running that much anyways. On that same note, he even had an updated video on the subject and mentioned on his character he does not run anything past 25k defense and slaps everything else into HP. If you’re going to quote someone make sure you have the facts mate.

Shields are the worst not defense. You can have 10k shields and swamp walker rockets will still melt it. So no. You’re right HP is the best by far but you still NEED some defense and on other ones like Ajax defense increases his skill power. You want to focus on hp then her defense on everything else you can’t get hp on basically to become the true ultimate tank then percentage based healing from HP collector with a huge health pool. Shields are what are worthless. However, I bet they’ll rework shields later so I’ll keep perfect roll components on that for when that happens specifically for Kyle. Even in his you’re tankier ignoring shield entirely (though you lose out on bonus damage from skills).

Its the mod you are using. They are multiplier. Add an increase hp mod or increase def mod to your descendant modules! Very important!! Edited: ALSO UPGRADE THEM!!

This is a flawed test, you’re comparing elemental resistance to defense and misleading a lot of players. There’s plenty of videos out there that explain how stats work might wanna look into that

The flaw of the testing method is that you are standing still and that you do not have HP collector module into account. I may enter into the test with 13K hp on Lepic but the +9% MAX HP restored on kill will bring me back much more than total 22K over a prolonged engagement. So to make it count to make that variable HP for more valuable the defense and resistances come into play.
