This video surpassed my expectations of comparing side-chaining with compressors vs LFO. I appreciate how you went into detail into the pros and cons of each technique. Btw, the unnatural sound at 9:48 is a staple of the Com Truise sound =)

So nice. Thanks again. I began a researching the issue, because I was convinced that only an LFO does not solve issues all ducking issues . Imagine Heavy NeuroF with heavy double kicks or heavy uses of ghost kicks, the LFO just destroys the audio channel. I found myself going back and forward between both ducking solutions.

thanks a lot for the clarification between compressor/gatekeeper and lfo tool method. actually very nice explained this makes so much sense.

Good tutorial. Sometimes I do both (compressor and lfo tool) on the same signal. Let LFO handle the attack and the compressor handle the "body" of the signal. Also don't forget about sidechain dynamic EQ. 💯
@michaelduff23823 жыл бұрын
So from what I understand, you should use an External Instrument device ANY time you're sending midi to a plugin on different track? Be it ShaperBox, Stutter Edit, Scaler? I've never noticed a latency issue doing it the basic way but there's lots of things I don't notice haha

Soothe 2 has frequency side chain feature. That is unique feature that allows you to solve frequency conflicts between sounds, not only kick/bass, but also with rest of the sounds.
@TapeGone3 жыл бұрын
I'd say soothe2 is more about frequencies conflict surgery, so if you need ducking in your sound, compressor is probably better choice than soothe2 at least regarding CPU usage.

Nice comparison. Now, could you have grouped Ext Inst with the drum rack, so you wouldn’t have to create a duplicate track?

Exactly... i do that aswell, grouped Ext Inst, on the actual midi drum track , then i don't have to create a separate 'trig' track

Hi and thanks for the amazing free video ! Instead of creating a new midi track, is it possible to group the drum instrument and the external instrument into an instrument rack ? It works well and I guess the latency is still compensated.

Love that you took a subject that’s over discussed and pushed on new producers for more YT views and show it is just like other areas of production where it just depends on material. Learning always has areas of bad information and sometimes that’s how you learn by thinking that’s how it’s done till you realize it’s wrong. I appreciate your stop the bs teaching it’s material dependent so let’s look at the results attitude

with the sidechain tool from ableton, do both signals have to be audio? in your first example you ducked the bass and synth for the kick and snare drum. Was the bass and synth both audio ? I assumed the synth was midi and it made me wonder if they both have to be audio. Can I duck a midi synth using the sidechain compression tool if the drums are audio?
@28iFmusic3 жыл бұрын
Great video I really enjoy the channel. I believe you can just group the simpler with the kick or snare and add the external instrument (in a chain) instead of creating a whole new track with the midi.

Thank you for the vídeo. My suggestion is to have a good osciloscope after that. Because phase issues and dB sum may occour after a bass+kick hit. And this is not good. Sometimes, the full level to zero is the only way. Sometimes, tô duck the bass only with the fundamental freqs from the kick will cut.

I've been investigating this a bit.. But I fail to understand how the external instrument inserted on a midi-channel without an exposure to the audio return is able to calculate for the latency compensation. To me it sounds like the external instrument plug in needs to know the time difference between the midi trigger and the audio return to the inserted plug to calculate the latency. I fail to see something here.
@Lordxfx Жыл бұрын
The first method to me even sounds better (using the midi-from) to the channel containing the LFO too), because kick track is time compensated because it generate both midi and audio. Copying the midi from the acting kick track to an empty one as a trigger, introduces in my opinion the same problem as with the external instrument tool without an audio return path. I'm just thinking out load here.

abletons compressor also have a built in feq splitter that can make it so that certain frequencies also bypasses the sidechain, or at least thats what i think not 100% sure. i never use it
@SeedtoStage3 жыл бұрын
Abletons compressor features a sidechain eq / filter which can make the compressor react to whatever frequencies you choose but that isn't the same thing as a a split. The split instead bypasses the effect using a special crossover.
