Excellent explanation of the potentially often difficult to explain topic of Nitrogen application methods / techniques / needs for crops if I may say so especially when you quite rightly brought in the role / use of pig manure on your farm. I also felt that you explained the need and reason for grass waterways. I think that many people will be surprised about the extent of the use of electronics and computerisation in modern agriculture. Overall brilliant video and oh so needed as an industry viewed by others not involved in the industry that we are a collection of straw sucking yokels shuffling about through life!!

Nice to come home to another video, Carl. I was wondering about the tropical storrm effects. I could see on the radar that you were getting the wet side of the storm. It has been asked already but what about the damaged corn? Will it grow back? It is too late to replant, I think. The fertilizer - I looked it up to see what it is. There is some pretty powerful stuff there. How is it delivered and how do you mix it? Side note, does your wife know you have that stew pot?

Carl, my thoughts on the demand for commodities is possibly changing for the better for you. With the current issues going on in the country, I have a feeling a higher demand for food will be coming. I'm not one to watch for futures either but I'd keep an eye on the market just to see what happens. Granted, I could be wrong but better safe than sorry.
@Doyle-Nutbush
@Doyle-Nutbush 4 жыл бұрын
What on earth makes you think food demand will rise ?? 50 million people unemployed, 100% of restaurants are at 50% capacity or less nationwide, current trade battles with China will reduce exports hence supply will rise and prices will fall in the next 6-12 months ??????????
@Sean4Help
@Sean4Help 4 жыл бұрын
@@Doyle-Nutbush While it may seem like things are at their worst, these things are always true: It's always darkest before dawn, Hope is sometimes all any farmer has and we should cultivate that (no pun intended) so I will give what support I can, and each time I've seen it the commodities markets boost after a serious decline. Reason? There are many but I'll give you several for the moment. All those restaurants you're talking about? When the countries (US/Canada) do fully open, how much fresh product will they have? Most everything is in a freezer and needs to be replaced quickly when the economy starts back up. There is a supply gap right now that will also have to be filled and will have a higher demand come soon. The looting in some cities has increased demand since there is no food in the stores that got hit. To your benefit, you make some good points, and I'm no expert, but I would opt on the side of hope, prayer, and even some optimism that this will turn around. If you truly feel this is that bad, then be grateful for what you have and keep moving. Things do change for the better sometimes. When I was living in Iowa, my first jobs as a boy were in farming when I lived there, my perspective about this was taught to me from a farmer. However, you're very welcome to disagree. I have no hard feelings and I'm ok with the idea that I could be wrong.
@dodgebrothersfarmandranch9206

It’s a pretty complicated system, but yes things do always tend to bounce back. Part of the problem in the livestock business is that currently there is an overwhelming surplus of live animals, but there is a shortage of meat. The packing houses are so far behind due to covid. So the meat is super expensive going out the door but they aren’t paying much for the animals. It’s a big mess of supply, demand, and processing capacity. Not sure exactly how everything is going to shake out, but I tend to land on the side of optimism as well.
@Sean4Help

@@dodgebrothersfarmandranch9206 I'm curious to know, have you considered selling direct to private customers that will buy cattle from you? Back where my parents are at in Oregon they bought a steer from a local rancher and a mobile butcher took care of the cut and wrap within a couple days. Not sure if this is something you may consider or even if the laws allow for it there, but I would hope this would remove the middle man some. My wife and I will be going back to the States soon (we're in Canada) but still not 100% where. However, if we ever end up close, we'd gladly buy one from you.

So on the higher rates you slow the ground speed or do you open up you spray regulator and pressure to increase the rate. Very interesting getting the application rates right for different areas in the crop.
@dodgebrothersfarmandranch9206
@dodgebrothersfarmandranch9206 4 жыл бұрын
Great question. There is definitely a range of acceptable pressure. I like to keep it between 40 and 80 psi. So changing out the size of the tip allows me to maintain the ground speed that I want without building too much pressure or not having enough. The flow regulator on the machine automatically opens and closes to keep the applied rate consistent regardless of what speed you travel. Thanks for the great question!

When you do the u-turn in the endrows when putting down the nitrogen does it damage any of the plants in the endrows?
@dodgebrothersfarmandranch9206

Good question! It depends on the stage it growth. It does knock them down, but if they are small enough they will stand back up again and be fine. If it’s a couple feet tall already it will break it off and it’s toast. The corn lost in the turns is a drop in the bucket compared to the benefit of splitting the nitrogen application.

@dodgebrothersfarmandranch9206
@dodgebrothersfarmandranch9206 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Curt! We choose to use the liquid because it is after and easier to work with. Anhydrous ammonia can be really dangerous if you get a leak in a hose or a broken valve or fitting. If we didn’t have any hog manure we would probably be applying anhydrous as it is slightly cheaper per acre than the liquid in a lot of cases.

Hi. I love how the GPS n technology guides the machinery between rows. Will that field across from yours recover or can it be reseeded? Do you use the same chemicals on corn eaten by humans? Do you n your brother plant corn for animals or humans? Why not just respray with more hog manure ( which is more natural n free) then use the chemicals? Not judging, just curious. Peace to you and yours
@dodgebrothersfarmandranch9206
@dodgebrothersfarmandranch9206 4 жыл бұрын
Hey these are all great questions! In assume the neighbors corn will actually still come out alive as young as it is. It will have less potential, but still better than having to replant in June. We don’t raise any corn specifically for direct human consumption, but I’m sure that most guys that do are still using a commercial nitrogen of some kind. The gif manure question is a food one. Here are the main problems with side dressing hog manure: 1. It would take 1,000 gallons per acre of hog manure to replace the nitrogen from 12 gallons of the liquid I’m using. That means way more trips and way more compaction of the soil. This would lead to more runoff into steams and rivers and ruin the ability of the soil to absorb rain water. 2. We apply all our hog manure with a drag hose to avoid compaction from large tanks being in the field. This would not work with standing corn because the hose would knock it all down. 3. There is not nearly enough manure around to supply all the nitrogen for all the crops. The 32%UAN that I’m using is the safest and simplest to apply form of nitrogen that we can get our hands on. Thanks for asking thoughtful these questions!
