This is the best video on this topic I've seen. I've watched them all.

Shel, love your approach, but wonder if this technique is applicable to the newer bikes which reportedly rely upon a specified resistance in the switch to prevent this type of bypass? My understanding is that newer models would require a dongle type bypass.

Hello Shel. I may have missed it, does this cause any fault codes that need the dealer / GS911 to clear?

No, certainly not on this 2005 model.

I'm hoping someone else reads this and found/finds the same issue. The official documentation from BMW is FUBAR. My side stand switch broke and I ordered the new replacement one that now is a separate switch and a separate harness. There is a connector on the switch for the new harness. Before the switch and harness was one assembly. Now you need to order two parts to replace the original assembly. I think the BMW documentation is wrong on the wire colors and the pins in which that are suppose to be installed. I agree with her findings the white and tan (brown?) wires need to be connected to fake out the bike thinking the kick side is up (retracted). But it you look at the BMW wiring documentation for 2007 R1200GS, the red and brown wires need to be connected. My findings trying to troubleshoot my side stand switch found the bike is wired as (pin/color), 1/tan, 2/white, 3/red. Documentation says 1/red, 2/white, 3/tan. I have to assume the bike is correct and the wiring docs are wrong. Even the wiring coming out of the switch's mating connector (X9039) has the wrong colors/wrap when compared to my actual bike. Bad situation all around! Bottonline (word of caution) Shorting the white with the tan wires will fake out the bike thinking the stand is up (retracted). You can start and shift with the side stand extended (down) or retracted (up). If you want to replace the switch with the new two piece assembly, pins 1 and 3 are likely reversed in the new harness. If you use the new two piece assembly what happens is when the stand is actually up (retracted) the bike thinks it is extended (down). When the side stand is actually down (extended) the bike thinks the side stand is retracted (up). I confirmed this a$$backwards conditions with my GS-911. The CANbus thinks the stand is up (retracted) when it is actually down. Likewise CANbus thinks the stand is down (extended) when it is actually up. So you can put the bike in gear with the side stand down and the bike will not turn off. Yeah, I thinks its a safety issue. Makes all your left hand turns a bit difficult. :)

Hi, just bought a 99 r1100 rs and want to do this so I can warm bike up prior to leaving for work. How long should engine be warmed up before riding? TY
@sheldoesstuff27536 жыл бұрын
Hello, i wouldn't leave it idling for too long because I have heard of the plastic screen on the oil sight glass (not glass it's plastic) melting due to too much heat. also, due to the way the oil cooling system is designed along with air cooling, the bike needs to be in motion to cool. Therefore, I guess about 5 to 10 minutes will be enough to ensure the bike is warm but not too long to overheat the system. Normally I start it when putting in my helmet and gloves, then it's good to go!

@@sheldoesstuff2753 Thx for the easy fix and clear, straightforward directions, Shel. Though unfortunately even 5 to 10 minutes idling is considered too long for these bikes, and another reason why they added the cutoff switch. So as stated in the owners manual, best to just start the bike and ride off. Yeah, oilheads don't like having little to no air flow over them, and letting an RT idle to warm up can easily cause the tupperware to melt, or catch fire (Google it)!

Help please! My side stand on BMW r1200r wire came off the connector.can not find anywhere where it is plug into! Spend 2 hours and cannot find it.my engine is twin boxer 1200cc
@sheldoesstuff27533 жыл бұрын
If it's the end which goes into the switch it may not be replaceable as it might be a single unit. Whereas if it is the end which fits into the loom, then that is likely up near the tank.

@@sheldoesstuff2753 yes the end to the loom.my question is I cannot find where it popped out from the end was loose under the tank .looked for 2 hours to find the female plug but cannot find it

Oh no! That's shite. Although, there is no consistency in any of the looks from my experience, even same models with one or two years difference can have big changes.
