Regarding old people living alone, around where I live some of the neighbours have kind of an unspoken rule where they turn on and off their porch light at specific times every day. A few years ago an elderly man who lives alone had a stroke, but survived because my nextdoor neighbour noticed his porch light wasn’t turned on at the right time so he went to check on him, found him on the floor next to his bed and was able to call an ambulance. The elderly man is completely fine now only because of the porch light rule, had he not gotten help in time it would’ve been a whole other story.

About the things you were talking about with Damien's neighbor, apparently that happens a lot in Sweden since the society there is shifting more to individualism - a lot of people live alone, there's more single mothers (who purposefully don't want to marry), more people working from home etc. (we watched a documentary on it at school - The Swedish Theory Of Love). It has it's positives, definitely, but sometimes it ends sad like the stories you were talking about when no one notices when they're gone and it's sometimes even hard to find relatives to manage the person's inheritance...

Your apartment advice was spot on! I have almost always been blessed to have amazing landlords! The only issues I’ve had were with corporate landlords. I had a rent control in Santa Monica forever, and my landlord was one of the kindest, most beautiful, people I’ve ever known. When times were hard, she just didn’t raise the rent. She fixed what needed to be fixed, cared about her tenants, and was known to let people, in the industry, to get behind and catch up on their rent. She still checks on me when there are issues in the place I live now. Good landlords are like gold, precious.

31:17 my grandma lives in an elderly community and she met a man there and they were basically bf/gf (her husband/my grandpa had died 14 years before that). About a month ago she had a lunch date with him and he was normally very punctual, but he didn’t show up or text her that morning. She went to his flat to check on him after lunch and found that he had died that morning while he was working on one of his craft projects.
