Please understand that there is a connection between poverty and hoarding. When you have lost everything before it is hard to let go of anything. Sickness and injury can start the prosses but getting help is hard to find. People who live like this know it's wrong, hate themselves, and hate the way they live but can not mentally break the problem. They want to change more than anything it's just truly impossible without help. We should be encourageing the development of programs that help people within their home break the cycle. Telling someone to clean isn't going to work you got to help clean, monitor progress, and do check ins. Providing psychiatric help will help as well. (I came from this environment as a child and and learned first hand what it is really like to be a hoarder.)

I hope Ethan's okay, or at least talks things out with people around him. He makes too many comments about suicide and that makes me question how often he's thinking about things like that. It may seem like they're in jest, or in relation to the videos etc... but they're likely coping mechanisms. I remember in his documentary he went in to some detail about darker times in his life. all of this is rooted in mental health, theres almost always some sort of trauma that triggers it. for my mom it was extreme depression after my dad died. ethan, i love you an youre one of my favorite sidemen, but its not that easy. my mom and i wish it was, but its not. and try slapping physical injuries and illness onto your mental health. youre not going to do much around the house if you dont care about yourself

I’ve been so proud of seeing Ethan talk about his mental health more recently and it’s really validated so many of my own feelings to see someone that successful also struggles with mental illness. The comment/joke he made that Simon replid to with “Have you thought about seeing a therapist?” is a comment/joke I make all the time. Its a coping mechanism and I don’t mean to make them because I know it’s makes others worry and it’s doesn’t always mean I’m in a bad place but I still make them anyway, so I emphasize and understand why he makes them. And because he’s been more open I thought maybe he would understand these people’s situations a little better and have a bit more empathy. It’s disappointing to see that he didn’t in this video. I don’t horde, but I understand why these people maybe do. These people have massive amounts of trauma and other reasons they can’t just “clean it up” and “throw stuff out”. It’s so much deeper than that. I really really love and respect Ethan, but I really hope he takes time to educate himself and have a bit more empathy for these people and their struggle.

As someone who has struggled with hoarding as a result of mental illness and chronic pain (I'm much better than I used to be, but it's a constant process), it's honestly really reassuring to see so many understanding people in these comments. Modern society engrains ableism in us from a young age, and so many things that people are often judged for are directly linked to disability, but it's really easy to not think of making that connection, because we're quite literally trained to think people who don't fit into the social norm are just lazy, or weird, or gross. Empathy is incredibly important, and it's just really great to see so much of it in these comments.

My grandma lost two husbands and a son in the span of 3 years and developed severe depression and hoarding as a result, which led to dementia, in an attempt to keep any memories she had left of them. It took over 3 days and an entire dumpster to clear out her apartment (including a dead possum in the garage) after it became inhabitable, then all the junk slowly trickled back in. Throwing away what may appear to be junk to you, may be priceless memories for them, big love to you guys but getting someone to do it for you easier said than done.

These people are clearly distressed by their situation, so if they felt equipped to make any changes, then I'm sure they would never have gotten into such a mess. Hoarding is never a choice - it's often a result of severe mental health issues and/or trauma. These people will struggle for a while, become overwhelmed, and will soon feel utterly powerless. This is not a 'practical' problem, it's a psychological one. And, quite honestly, this video was tone-deaf.

And every single person from the original video has more than earnt such a diagnosis. Remember, many people with physical conditions like hers will also struggle with their mental health; these two states are not mutually exclusive. It may look like she was making excuses to those who can't put themselves in her position, but someone with solely a physical medical condition would not hoard in such a way. To further reference my previous reply, even if she could afford to hire a cleaner, I don't think many normal cleaners would be equipped to tackle such a challenge. Where would you go for help if you were in her situation? There sadly isn't a lot of support around for those who struggle with such debilitating mental health conditions. No one would ever choose to live in a house like that. It's understandable that some of you will struggle to empathise with these people, but that's exactly why this video is so dangerous; it's spreading damaging misconceptions, which will intensify the stigmas attached to hoarding, and will shame those who actually have to endure it, potentially preventing them from getting help and even fuelling their symptoms, especially if they look up to and trust the opinions of these boys. It is dangerous to invalidate a person who struggles with their mental health. They have interpreted hoarding as some would interpret depression; hoarding is not simply about 'being untidy', just as depression is not simply about 'feeling sad'. They are serious medical disorders, and they must be treated as such.

Another thing that disturbed me in this video was the fact that Simon and Harry were slowly beginning to be influenced by Ethans Inconsiderate and rambunctious ways. Ethan, I was a hoarder for about four years after I lost my Mom and boxes of items of hers came to my place. Takes a while to get the courage to sort through stuff. Eventually some people can slowly get through it, others not so much as it's overwhelming to them. I was depressed as I am sure many of these people were. There are lots of reasons a place gets over run with items.

As someone who knows a fair bot about Chronic Fatigue Syndrom, in the worst of cases, yes it renders you constantly and purely energyless and can even render you in a wheel chair barely able to keep your head up, however there are ways of moving through and finding ways to live with it. Personally this video kinda hit hard on me cause I live in a like mild version of a “hoarders” from as long as I can remember. My mother suffers from depression which is why the house got so bad. The rooms we live in are quite messy apart from mine and my sisters room. And we have tried to clean but it ends up in a full blown argument cause my mum and dad wants to keep stuff. I’m not a hoarder but a single mum of two special/medical needs kids. It’s easy for things to get away. I still have a some tubs of baby toys & clothes that need to go.
