To be fair, he would have obtained the same result without the associated risks by just taking down the license plate. And even then, in the very remote offchance that was the case, I'd still wager its more important to prevent other accidents from happening rather than chase the culprit. While it wasnt the most reckless driving, I've seen at least 3 times where it could have gone badly if the other drivers werent as alert. Just one being distracted would have been enough.

It's illegal to even brandish your firearm at someone while driving except in SOME states where "lawful brandishing" is allowed in an instance where someone is actively threatening your life with their vehicle (i.e. swerving at you, actively ramming you, trying to force you off the road, etc.). In those instances it's seen as deterring an immediate threat to your life/well being.

To me, it's the same as someone pulling out a knife and stabbing someone or at least threatening someone during a road rage incident. You never know what someone has on them or in their car. Any road rage encounter can be dangerous as hell with or without a firearm involved. But it's truly not common in America
