Today we are talking about PrEP which is a drug you take, to prep in some ways to preventively not get HIV. Super fascinating! We know lots of people who are on it, so we wanted to talk about the science and the history AND if it’s safe.

It's also important to keep in mind that HIV doesn't always respond to our treatments. My SIL works at NIH, specifically with HIV patients and she still loses patients due to HIV. My friend takes PReP and his doc orders blood tests every 3 months for the reasons you mentioned in the video.

idk if it’s available in canada but the fda approved an injectable form of prep in december 2021 but i haven’t researched much about it since, so if your interested in prep but not good at remembering taking pills then that’s an option on the horizon. loved the episode ❤️

Even having 100% of my intercourses wearing a condom, I decided to get on PrEP. I had recently two accidents during sex and I had to go on PEP, wich gave me terrible side effects, so I decided to take continuously PreP so to avoid any future usage of PEP, which in terms of side effects for me was horrible, not to say the fear of contracting HIV after the exposure. Some guys do want to have unprotected sex claiming they are on PreP. All you have to do is say no. No one is forced to have a bareback boys.

The thing I heard a lot about condoms is, they don't fit very well. The last two partners I had, said they had bad experiences with condoms, because they were to tite. The guys didn't even know, there were different sized condoms

This was a really good episode. I was on PREP for a while when I was having more sex, it definitely created more peace of mind with HIV. I was scared of the risk of how hard it is on your kidney… and how bloated it made me the first couple of months. Also the way you all talked about it’s affects on other STI rates… I almost feel like I was more conscious on safer sex when not on PREP then when I was.. and I think a lot of other folks do to.

Also similarly as you talked about kidney functions.. in the US you have to get blood work every 3 months to make sure you’re still HIV negative and kidney function is okay.

Here in the UK we are required to take a kidney function test before taking PREP. This reduces the risk of kidney damage to negligible risk.

Episode ideas: -nuclear energy. The clean energy movement needs to stop demonizing it. -racism and xenophobia among animal lovers. It sounds very specific, but there’s this culture of people in developed countries demonizing people in countries they’ve never been to and exclaiming “how dare you kill this elephant?!… that’s been eating your hard-grown crops”. -related to prior - trophy hunting’s role in conservation. The animal activists make this such a black and white issue and it’s not.

Ive been taking PrEP for 2 years now daily. Had tons of hookups, mostly risky sexual activity and bareback anal sex and had been in a relationship with an HIV+ guy but he is U=U (which he couldnt transmit the virus even if im not on prep). Went well okay with me and Im doing good now. I regulary get tested every 3mos for all STIs and have my kidney function test every year. I recommend sexually active people to take PrEP as a form of protection. 😊

Thanks for this. I've chosen not to be on Prep for similar reasons. However we do need to recognise that Prep has been phenomenal in reducing the number of new HIV cases in places where it is widely available. Here in the UK the health authorities are even aiming for zero new HIV cases by 2030.

Okay so why isn't anyone talking about the risk oral sex poses most of the time, especially considering NO ONE likes to wear a condom to either give or receive oral sex? It's great we have PrEP and condoms available but let's not lie and pretend unprotected oral sex is not an extremely, excessively common practice and that we do get sick both bacterially and virally from it.

You need to be on prep 4 to 7 times a week . The most protection comes from taking it after 7 days plus it easier if you take it everyday . If you miss one or two days you’ll be fine that’s why you should take it everyday . If taking the pills everyday too much they do have the shot which is every 3 months . I honestly think everyone gay or straight should take it .
