A century ago, many central banks across the world were owned privately. Then came along a Portuguese man called Alves Reis, who tried to buy the Bank of Portugal with fraudulent currency, hoping to legitimize his fraud after acquiring a controlling stake. His plan almost worked... until he was discovered, crashing the Portuguese economy and ushering in 50 years of dictatorship. Oops.

Well, I don't know how widespread this was at the end of the 19th century, but people in the past used to specialise in many different fields. Plus, geology, physics, mathematics and civil engineering are things that would be very useful to an engineer working with railroads.

Alves would sit in the national assembly watching the discussions about the country's economy, that's how he discovered the Portuguese central bank printed their money in the uk, there's where he discovered as well it was a public bank with shares that could be bought, he also approached ambassadors and public officials to stamp the official papers and go to the uk to make the money printing deals.

The man must have been an avid reader, scholar to know at that time that the central bank was not owned by the government (I only found out that fact last year or so..) The trouble I always notice with those who have the brains to crawl out of poverty (using less than legal means) is that they are never easily satisfied and do not know when to call off the ploy.
