She also sews and tailors, crochets, gardens (we had a big organic garden for a while, with a big patch of blueberry bushes and some raspberries that she was damn determined to coax into fruiting on the US Gulf Coast) cross stitches. Once my parents split she went back to school and became an aircraft mechanic, working several jobs to do so and still provide for me and my sister. She retired recently, and is renovating her home. I know this video was posted 6 months ago, but I'm a new subscriber. I've been watching your videos the new and the old ones but that's when I get the chance to do so. I'm a busy single mom to 5 kids and the youngest one being a special needs toddler. But anyways I wanted to comment on this video because I grew up in the 90's. My aunt was a cake decorator/artist and of course I was so drawn to them! And yes the barbie cakes were my most favorite! I can remember looking at the Wilton's catalog with all kinds of decorated cakes. I looked at those catalogs/magazines all the time! I very much appreciated how beautiful and realistic cakes were made. So my mom was taught a little on how to decorate just the simple basics, and that was just the coolest and most fascinating thing I had ever saw! My mom wasn't too much interested in it so we got the cake pans you mentioned, and Barbie was one of them! We also had Barney, Sesame street characters, and so on. With me being 35 years old now I still have that fascinating thing about cakes lol. Seeing your art and passion for cakes definitely makes me admire you very much! BUT as the wedding venue picked the baker/decorator and the decorator didn’t do those type of cakes I got a 2 tiered quilted design instead with sugar flowers 🤦🏼♀️ seriously would have been quicker for the decorator to do the topsy Turvey cake but whatever In australia, the barbie doll cake is called a Dolly Varden cake and the tins for it are horrible as they are usually quite tall and look like a mixing bowl, AND because of the narrow ‘top’ the cake itself does not always cook evenly and so it either ends up undercooked with a runny middle or overcooked and dry because it’s uneven haha

I have had so many of the cake trends you mentioned. I've had multiple unicorn cakes, an ombre cake, a few drip cakes, an ice cream cone melting cake, a doll cake. My mum also made all of these. Other cake trends I think there are/were, a princess/castle (had this one) and one with jelly (jell-o) in it (had a swimming pool one)

My mom just saw the end product and was amazed and quickly handed over the phone to me because she couldn't bear to see her cutting this masterpiece 😂

Number cakes. I was a single mom for 17 yrs & money was tight, so i'd make my daughter's bday cakes. I'm not artistic at all, but a few years I made number cakes. I couldn't afford the special pans i'd only use one time, & this was in the 80s & before pintrest. I'd bake a rectangle cake & assemble it into whatever age number she was & decorate. It was simple enough for me to do & she loved them. I'm new to your channel & think you are so very talented!
