@@ruud9761 But the 'earning their money' and 'giving jobs to thousands' is part of the lie we are all sold by billionaires (and more specifically billionaire owned media). It's not that they're giving people jobs, it's that they're exploiting the hard work of ordinary people for free profit Though you're right that they often start with a lot of money themselves... as for unique experiences or risk that's usually nonsense. @@saoirsedeltufo7436 There are some very rare cases where I'd say a billionaire has earned their money, or at least a good chunk of it, and it's exclusively in cases where something normally small-scale has turned large, such as being an author. If you consider somebody buying a book as somebody paying for primarily the contents of the book, rather than the paper, and if you consider the author buying the materials, machine time, and labour required to put it all together as a fair transaction, as you likely do on a small scale, then when an author sells millions of copies of their book, they can legitimately earn huge amounts of money. so, with regard to the 'collecting rainwater isnt allowed' usually these types of laws are passed in places where either 1) they live in a neighborhood with an HOA and they agreed to those terms upon buying their home, and the HOA just wants a certain aesthetic 2) its in high population areas, where there is a concern for standing water that can breed pests like mosquitos. Usually in these areas they allow rainwater collection with some sort of restriction like requiring that your collection area have a lid/is able to be closed off. Other states just require that you inform local municipalities that you're adding that to your property, which again makes sense if the municipalities have an issue with airborne illnesses from water-fairing bugs like mosquitos. 3) Some states need the rainwater to replenish rivers and water tables, so they put in restrictions that the water has to come from your roof, and it cant be water that has already entered streams. in most states it is completely legal to collect rainwater and in many of them it is actively encouraged.
@jacobkrawczyk47722 жыл бұрын
That first one is barely a rebuttal in the end because HOAs are fucking awful for reasons directly related to the broader problems of capitalism. Fuck HOAs and their classist bullshit. The second point is, on the other hand, much more fair to the extent that it’s enforcement is also equal and fair. But I’m willing to bet that if it comes into fashion for rich people to collect rainwater they won’t be inhibited nearly as much as poorer folks who do it to get by.

In the case of water bills, if the arrears are high enough, the water company can take you to court and get a CCJ. If you own your house rather than rent, they can secure the debt under a charging order, and it'll be paid back when you sell your house.

I had a thought about not being able to collect rainwater. If you think about it, in densely packed areas, with minimal rainfall, if a lot of people collect the rainwater, then that could limit the amount return to the ground-water-table (idk what the actual word is). Still, I'm sure there's a smart way around that hypothetical scenario.
@cameronwilsey93342 жыл бұрын
Also, rain water has to condensate around something be it dust, bacteria, or side pollutant. So living a bit removed from a city I think the only concern would be storing it safely, but if your near or in a big city I could see the water not being especially safe. That said, I'm not defending the laws. Nor do I know about why they exist. I'm just putting them in potential perspective
@wesleyewert10232 жыл бұрын
@@cameronwilsey9334 well they exist because the companies that are selling you tap water can't make money on you collecting your own water. so they bribe politicians to put laws like this in place under some made up reason like water quality. same deal with the laws against solar power.

yes, the most simple solution to this "problem" is that people who catch the rainwater also use it and not store it indefinitely.

I've never heard of rainwater collection being illegal in the US. It's entirely unregulated in my state. There are only two states where it's strictly controlled. In more than half of states it's unregulated and often encouraged, and in those where it's regulated (plumbing, health & safety) it's often encouraged or incentivized. There might be further regulations at the county and municipal level, I don't know. Using rainwater collection systems for irrigation is a good thing. It takes a long, long time for aquifers to be replenished, so if you utilize rainwater instead of taxing water supply and treatment, those resources are conserved.

theres a fair bit more nuance to a number of these issues, a huge factor being the fact that some issues arent universal throughout the US and some regulations have a reason behind them, for example, as other people have been mentioning, limiting the collection of rain water is important for maintaining the water supply for natural streams and springs, and many municipalities also restrict the surface area of pavement for similar reasons, especially since pavement is also a huge factor in storm water management the restrictions against solar panels is kinda stupid though, although i personally havent heard of that actually being a thing, at least not in my area
@lliamdavis69502 жыл бұрын
the issue isn't that people are collecting rain water and ruining the ecosystem, the issue is that you are paying so much for water that you are considering collecting the rain to not go broke. That and the fact that these are issues anywhere in the world especially America the home of the free and the land where anyone can go big.

Not even socialism, just taking care of your people and not allowing them to be exploited by the corporations and systems that have been in place for centuries. "socialism" has historically been done as a facade of populism to foster political and military power under a nationalist regime. They don't have enough to actually do it, and it often led to terrible things like children working as doctors in China because "equity". What this would be is limitations on the ridiculous things that corporations can do, not a complete governmental shift. Electricity companies and water companies should not be allowed to charge poverty-inducing sums of money to ANYONE. Hospitals and pharmaceutical companies should not be allowed to charge poverty-inducing sums to ANYONE. Insurance? That should just be what the government does at a base level to take care of its citizens, instead of just leaving it up to them to live and die while they sit back uncaringly. Not bread handed out in lines like under socialist regimes.

Couldnt disagree more with rythian... Forget the us , they are fucked all around . But you can't say the same for eu countries, capitalism is extremely important for society's growth and its not like we have a true capitalistic system. The middle is where its at...
@Cotif112 жыл бұрын
Well you're wrong, capitalism /was/ the only reasonable way for the economy to function, now it's a danger. Capitalism is purely the idea that we should have private ownership of the means of production in a pursuit of profit, that is inherently immoral and unfair and leads to corruption. Don't even talk about "economic growth" as if it's all good, its not any good, look at where we're at with a dying planet, overpopulation, social discord, all for what? To continue dangerous and unfettered growth that only continues to destabilize nations. You're probably mistaking capitalism for a free market economy which can easily be protected under a socialist system, they do function all the time together, in fact, socialism can't be successful without some measure of a free market, but that doesn't mean the government has to tolerate abuse by these private enterprises for the sake of profit. Capitalism means money rules and the rich get richer while the poor stay poor, socialism means the people rule and we're all treated like valuable members of society. The King of Norway said that people who feel like they don't belong to a society won't give back to it. Why do you think America is tearing itself apart right now? Why do you think Antifascists, socialists, and communists are still active in Europe? Obviously people still feel disenfranchised and want a bigger piece of the pie and want our government and economy to stop being motivated purely by profit. The pussy version of socialism is called social capitalism and it's for people who think capitalism is still worth saving, it's this precious little fantasy that "oh if only we were all goodhearted people, capitalism can work for the good of all!!1!"
