Great film, I only found out about it from Sidney’s book on filmmaking. Its long but never stagnant. There’s something very much the forerunner of Spielberg’s ‘Munich’ in this. It’s all fun and games until its an interminable hell and you can’t escape.

A fascinating interview discussing the complexities of a great crime film. Also, it is nice to footage of Jay Presson Allen speaking about her part in the making of this film. She was a great collaborator with Sidney Lumet.

Lumet made a classic here. The late Treat Williams should have gotten the Academy Award. Thanks for this post.

Sorry Sidney spelled your name wrong please forgive me. Treat Williams the sort of performance that should have earned him at least an Oscar Nomination. But the competition that year was tough. Henry Fonda On Golden Pond,Burt Lancaster for Atlantic City, Paul Newman for Absence of Malice,Warren Beatty for Reds, and Dudley Moore for Arthur.

71of the 90 SID officers in the NYPD were convicted or plead guilty. I grew up 3000 miles away in San Diego and I was 18 when I first saw this film in 1981. The type of gritty tough Police crime drama that Sydney Lumet was born to direct. Treat Williams I had seen before in 1941and the film version of Hair. But Jerry Orbach excuse my ignorance I thought was a real New York City police Officer who retired after 20 years on the force and became an actor. After he retired. In 1981 I had no idea he had been a song and dance man on Broadway and off for almost twenty years. Jerry was so realistic and natural in Prince of the City. For many years I hoped wished and waited that Jerry Orbach would get a part in Law and Order and finally he did. Detective Lenny Briscoe is an extension or close cousin to the part he played Gus Levy in Prince of the City.

In the chapter “The Camera” in Sidney Lumets’ book “Making Movies” he describes the lens & lighting techniques used to convey the themes & emotions of the film. It is fascinating.

why isn't it "sidney lumet and jay presson allen" in the title?

This film is just as good- possibly better- than Serpico, and yet it's criminally overlooked. Pardon the pun.

Prince of the City is much better than Serpico. A man climbing out of the Hell he created is always better than a hero's journey.

how is clarifying that they had information pertaining to the characters taken from transcripts and that they screened it for the DEA, justice department et all. for approval "not helping"?
