Great repot. Should be just lovely as the new leaves emerge and contrast with the lovely blue glaze. Love how delicate the branching is - I think I'm growing my branches too thick - gives the trees a heavier feeling. The CD looks like its done a good job flattening the root base. I guess your choice of removal will depend on how much is visible as you start exposing you nebari. CDs are stupid tough to cut - I've used tin snips to destroy them, but wire cutters should work as well.

Thanks, Sue. Was in two minds about removing the CD and wonder if I should have done it this time. Oh well, it's too late now. The tree also has great autumn colour, which will look good in that pot. I thought my branches needed to thicken a little, so....

You're welcome. Cooper is happy more than he's not, for now, at least. The painkillers he's on allow him to move around reasonably well within limits, and his buggy means he can still get out and about.

Poor old Cooper Sid those paws look really painful, I can sympathise with him I also very painful arthritis in most of my joints and neck which sometimes sends me on the floor without warning, anyway let’s talk about your work, you do now have a good root system using the plate under the roots , so having to reduce the roots shouldn’t be a problem, impressive tree you have grown from seed Sid, the pot is very nice blue colour. Maples are rewarding trees to have in a collection, the new leaves are very delicate and lovely colours, most of mine are now in leaf and looking really good the deshojo especially looking splendid. This year it appears that the maples are bigger and better than ever with lots more leaves, my Field maple has always had tiny leaves not sure why completely against the usual size, but this year the leaves are the size I would expect them to be and more of them, other trees also seem much better this year, must be the warmer winter we have had and also very wet, I have started feeding mine now I know you use temperature control pellets mixed in when you repots which suits you, I use neruko, each time I feed trees I put a piece of wire sticking out of the pot to remind me that I have fed them as my memory now is no very good so at the end of the season I know how many feeds they had by counting the wires usually 3 or 4. That’s a long ramble again Sid my friend.

Ramble away Joe. You always make sense to me. Like the idea of putting wire in to remind of how many feeds given. Guess you have to remember to do that though! Cooper manages well considering. Lots of painkillers and riding in his buggy when tired/ hurting helps a lot. Many if my trees are not in full leaf yet!

I to suffer with arthritis at the young age of 45, it's a horrible thing, and as it's not a visual disability, not many are sympathetic or understand. I feel for cooper and wish him all the best in his remainder of his time ❤️ he seems in good hands!

I happily discovered a cd under a thuja recently, I removed mine, lovely root spread! Maybe leaving it would have been a better choice?.? Great tree as always!

I really don't know Rob. Since repotting, I've wondered if I should have removed it. However, I'm not going to disturb the tree again and will maybe remove it next repot. Time will tell, but it hasn't hurt up to this point. I wonder if I will be surprised to find it there. With my memory, probably!

@@SidsTrees ha ha. Memory sounds as bad as mine 🤣 must laugh at these things or I would cry. Sometimes my memory, or lack of, is good when rewatching programs or films 😏 I would have thought it will do good keeping it there, mine served its job and think leaving it will help keep the roots flat.

Interesting use of a CD. Are there any genres or particular recording artists you would recommend?

I don’t know if that would have been pertinent but I’d have removed more roots to fit in the pot rather that tucking the old ones and I’d have treated the cuts on the trunk to accelerate scaring. Best time of the year for big changes as no leaf out yet!

I've killed a lot of trees by overworking them over the years, so maybe a bit cautious, but I would rather be safe than sorry.
