Incredible! I have lived in Cincinnati my entire life. I even like to consider myself a bit of a History Buff. Yet, I had NEVER even heard a mention or whisper of this event. I feel cheated. My child will know of this, and so much more that they leave out of our classrooms.

I, too, had never heard of this history, despite growing up in Newport. Obviously, most historians preferred to write about the great armies and battles -- Cincinnati was only "beseiged" for 2 days, and no pitched battles were fought, just small losses on both sides due to incidents between scouts/pickets. The great story here is how the citizens of Cincinnati, Newport and Covington pulled together in essentially a citizen militia to build miles and miles of breastworks for defense... which were then manned by citizen soldiers. It worked: the Confederate Army retreated quickly after seeing these unexpected yet effective defenses. To the folks at NKU who did this video -- THANKS!!

I never knew about this until I saw the monument on at the Banks. This kind of local history should never be forgotten. Thanks you for add more context and information on that event.

I never really like Cincinnati my whole life growning up here but the more i learn the more i respect my home.i want to find some good historic spots to go check around and stuff.i wounder how i would find out where these events happened.i want to know the exact locations and go check them out.

I lived briefly at the end of Pueblo Street in Mt. Auburn. The home was built on a Civil War mortar emplacement-it was located part-way down the south side of Mt. Auburn on a terrace carved into the side of the hill. It had an unobstructed view of downtown and the Ohio River valley westward from about the C&O bridge. I'm guessing this was part of the fortifications in preparation for the siege in the video above. Can anyone confirm this?
