If you don’t mind jumping back in 1.12.2 version of MC, you should take a look at the Ancient Warfare mod, that adds along side loads of NPCs and easy way to control them, also adds actual functional siege weaponry going from ballistas to trebuchets, through cannons and catapults. You can even have builder NPCs building automatically siege towers and bridges, or even siege camps… There are also cool looking gates, herses, and battering Rams. And ofc, NPCs are fully able to control the siege weaponry.

I see a fatal flaw in your tower design that could have saved some of the red soldiers....The stairs inside of the tower have to spiral in the opposite direction so that the blue men coming the up stairs have their sword hands towards the wall. That way the blue's can't get in a good sword swing without being inhibited. - The reds could swing as their sword arm is free coming down in the opposite direction. Also, any straight run of stairs have also got to be reversed for the same reasons.
