Siemens E311e HF Receiver

This is a Siemens E311e HF receiver as manufactured in the 1960-70's. Used a lot in ground and maritime radio. It was an excellent performer for its time. Allowing any frequency to be set to within +/-50Hz. Stability was due to temperature control of critical oscillators. This example was restored at VK4GXC, Ovens needed repair, some cosmetic work and a full realignment returned the unit back to fully operational condition.

I have a set of this with an antenna diversity unit and a telex interface unit. Like the rx very much, very accurate frequency and stable. It has its own original metal cabinet which is pretty nice.

Very helpful and informative presentation. I just bought one of these with the LW adapter. It is coming from Germany, I hope to have it next week. I am very excited to play around with it. How does the “scale correction” screw work? Does it move the Khz marker, or the Mghz marker? Or is it like a 390 where it tunes the radio without moving the numbers? Thank you!

Hi, Thanks for the comment, the caps seemed ok, although to look at they are not really mill standard. The main issues i had were with the relays which switch in and out for a number of different reasons. They are typical Telecom relays from the time, a bit of contact cleaning fixed most issues but one of the relays had some corrosion on the energising relay coil wires where they are wrapped around the relay legs, completely corroded through and O/C. luckily there was enough coil wire length left to unwind a little and re solder. The other issue is the heaters/thermostat. My 1 MHz oscillator thermostat was not working due bad transistor inside the oscillator housing. The circuit was potted and took a bit of digging out to repair the transistor. The main VFO heater wasn't working because of the relay issue I mentioned above. Note, At switch on both green heater lamps should be on. After about 10mins the 1MHz heater lamp should start to switch on and off and after about 20-30Mins the VFO heater should switch on and off. (if they remain on the heaters just keep heating!!) Once these were working i went through the unit and realigned everything, some parts are tricky but it all came back. Oh and check your mains voltage we have 240V here and set is normally set for 220V. Its possible to reset the taps ( is seem to recall unsoldering 2 wires). If left at 220V the set is a little stressed....Good luck with the restroration
