Check out the options available for the Siemens SIMATIC IoT2050 example operating system image. In this video, we demonstrate how to turn on RS-485 serial communication, enable GPIO, change IP addresses, and access Node Red.

Great Video!!! But have a doubt, How can we configure Mini PCIe card for internet, are there any connections or configurations need to be done while setting up?

Hey there, the main thing in using a Mini PCIe card is to make sure that it will work with the Linux Kernel headers (Debian) used for the IoT2050. We've used a PCie Wifi card in the past and it was automatically detected, then you can just turn on the network in the IoT2050 configuration interface shown in the video.

Im thiniking to rum Openwrt in this device but I need to write the firmeware. What you think about this idea?

This device can only acquire data from PLC ? or make also little dashboard to control the PLC system? It seems like it works exacly like an edge device, isnt it?

Yes, it's like a Raspberry Pi with additional industrial rating. You can add GPIO, but it's very open ended because it's just the operating install with some tools to get you started.

Is sending data to cloud is only possible using Iot gateway's only? Cant i do the same using the Industrial router only?
@outlierautomation

There's definitely many different ways to get data into a cloud. Many companies have solutions these days. That being said, the SIMATIC IoT2050 is specifically an IPC, kind of like an industrial-grade Raspberry PI, so it's very flexible as to what you can do with it. If you just want to push data to the cloud, they are in the process of releasing the Mindconnect Iot2050, which is preconfigured for different industrial data protocols. In addition Siemens is putting a ton of effort and features into their Industrial Edge platform which allows keep your data on premise.

@@outlierautomationIt is the different ways I'm exploring. I like to ask you something, apart from IOT2040/2050 have you also worked with different devices. If yes, can you name them and how did you do it (like using node-red or something else).

Your explanation is very good, I have a doubt, I would like to have access to the node-red image through a monitor connected to the displayport, is it possible?

If I understand your question, you'd need to install a desktop environment on the Debian OS. You'd probably want to install something lightweight like XFCE wiki.debian.org/Xfce. Then you'd use something like Chromium in order to see the NodeRed GUI wiki.debian.org/Chromium.

@@outlierautomation Hmm! You're correct with desktop environment. will play with it.

Hi, nice video i have a problem with the iot 2050 i have configured the two ethernet adapters but only ping the last one adapter that i connect, i'm wondering if you know is that normal or there is a configuration that i dont know, thanks

Hi Hugo, the two different ports are different subnets, so depending on how you're connected to the device, it is expected that you can't ping both. If you can share some details on how you set it up, happy to try to help further.

Did you also use Raspberry Pi as an IOT device with PLC and installed in industry? If yes, then would you refer it for using it “24×7 industrial applications and environment"?

You can use raspberry PI as IOT device, It does not have a problem for running 24*7 but there would be other difficulties, * The build quality and casing wont be suitable for Industrial environments * It is better to have two ethernet ports for the device, one for PLC and Other for internet connectivity * Serial port is also necessary

Hi nice tutorial! Is sending data from PLC to cloud using node-red is a fool-proof method? Meaning what will happen if suddenly the internet fails or device is turned off-turned on.

Node Red is definitely a programming environment, like a blank canvas. If you want to buffer data when the internet disconnects, you'd need to build that in. You may want to consider MQTT as a protocol to a cloud connection, because you can configure the protocol to ensure that all data that is sent is received on the other end. www.outlierautomation.com/blog/what-is-mqtt-sparkplug

Although I have read your article and share-ed your article(far-reach) for your efforts. Also, once came across “MQTT spark plug too (opto)” but still haven't implemented it, will do in the near future. Although I did use MQTT node in node red to send data to cloud. Also, what do you mean by this statement “If you want to buffer data when the internet disconnects, you'd need to build that in”. By any chance are you referring to Node-red Autostart feature in IOT2050/2040? If not, How did you do that?

Hardware-wise ,clearly there is a difference between IOT2040, IOT2050(Basic) and IOT2050(Advanced) but application and use-case wise, how would you differentiate it? Will you differentiate it like "If you want to collect 60 variable, then you should use IOT2040" or "If you want to connect one PLC only, then you should use IOT2040 only"? Hope i'm making sense. There should be clear distinction between them application wise without causing overload.

the IoT2040 is discontinued. the IoT2050 is basically a Raspberry Pi (single board computer) but with the hardware beefed up to be able to withstand higher temperatures and also has the serial port on the front for RS-232 / RS485. There are other single board computer options on the market; the question is if you want something that is preprogrammed or you want / need to make a custom application for your process.
