"Love is not breathless, it is not excitment. It is not the promulgation of promises of eternal passion. That is just being "in love" which any of us can convince ourselves we are. Love itself is what's leftover after being in love has burned away." Quote from the novel Captain Corelli's Mandolin. This is how I saw Raoul & Christine from the orginal production. I saw them as a couple who could live together happily long after the passion subsides. While being love was Phantom of Christine.

I'm with you! Once they tried to sexualize the relationship between Phantom and Christine, it becomes more untrue and looses its actual meaning. There is a good hint of sexual pull between the two of them, but the real basis of their relation is (by how I see it) rather the effort of building love through compassion and understanding. Passion and sexuality are in fact more apparent in Christine and Raoul's (former) relationship in which it was driven by shallow romantic naivety.

Thats really cool! I have never experienced it :(

That's where I heavily disagree. Christine did not just choose to sing All I Ask of You to Raoul because he is wealthy & handsome. She feels protected by him, she can trust him with her secrets and life. She saw his bravery & loyalty to her when he was willing to to die for her in the lair. Having a power over someone is not good. If it were real love then she would easily decide for herself she wanted to be with him. Having a muscial connection doesn't convicne me either. Music is everywhere.

I would have loved to watch this in the West End with Sierra and the OLC. It's so sad they shut the show, I have a fondness for the show.

There are rumors of "Love Never Dies" to return this year. Oh God will they have Sierra back as Christine

So happy to see that someone else agrees with me. :) I have no doubt that if true love were about being sexually passionate. More relationships would last. But since they don't, the evidence speaks for itself. It's the relationships that are based on trust, respect, commitment, honesty, and compassion like you said will stand the test of time.

Using a child as blackmail does not make him stable. He left Christine out of his own insecurity. Then then years later decides he wants her back and expects her to be happy to see him when she thought he was dead. There's a lot of issues. And Christine is not innocent either. She should have told Raoul that she loved the Phantom more. But instead she sleeps with him and when she wakes up decides to abandon him after she accpeted his marriage proposal. Cheating is never the answer.

I personally completely disagree with her ideas about Raoul. Raoul is amazingly strong and I think Christine loved him a lot, different from the Phantom. What could the Phantom give her that Raoul couldn't? Passion? Raoul's pretty passionate. Music? There is plenty of music in the world. Crazy mood swings with volatile shifts into destructive anger? Oh yeah, maybe that's the one he misses. Damn, I can see why he'd go crazy now *Sarcasm*

@TheAzbycxdwevfu But as Sierra said herself. Nobody is innocent in this show. (Spoilers! Don't read my comment if you wish to avoid them) I think Raoul recieves more flack then he needs. If Christine truly loved the Phantom then she should have said so. Instead she becomes intimate with the Phantom the night before her wedding & decides when she wakes up she'll run away with him. Which would have left Raoul lost & alone after he was willing to die for her. She comes across more as the villian.

@Marylmac The sexual chemistry between Phantom & Christine is evident. And it's clear Andrew wanted that to be one of the reasons people should root for that couple. So they wouldn't be labeled as boring which is how Raoul & Christine have become. He wrote this show with the intension of trying to display "A sexual passion wins over a stable & calm relationship." And it was easier to portray Raoul as the bad guy because of that reason. I disagree with him becuase I don't see the true love.

Okay. Now I see. Forgive me if at any point I was disrespectful to you. I'm sorry if I was since I never meant to be. Let's just say that I've been around the block more then once & my ideas of what true love is all about is very different then what is often depicted in films, musicals and whatnot. (As far as Phantom goes) I don't know about the Twilight connection since I've never read it. What do you mean your ideas about love are childish? Feel free to pm me if it makes you more comfortable.

It's interesting that Raoul knows that he can't give her the needed fulfillment that a certain type of music can. He knows & sings about it in a scene I saw. That would be heartbreaking, I know. I have experienced the same in love. There is a certain "..?.." that sets your soul on fire, something that drives you ever higher. Raoul was smart enough to know that, but stayed with her anyways. Remember, Christine was only 17 when she awoke to these new feelings. & unable to correctly judge them then

No I understand what your are saying and what Andrew Lloyd Webber is displaying. However I heavily disagree with it. I guess to say we agree to disagree is the only way this can end peacefully. Both of our ideas on what true love is are on the different end of the spectrum.
