Sierra Hull turns in a solo version of "Over the Mountain," a song she co-wrote and performs with guitarist Cory Wong.
On this track, she's using her main mandolin, a Gibson Master Model F-5 built by Gibson's David Harvey in 2009.

Sierra has been my introduction to the Mandolin, and as someone who has never been attached to bluegrass or country music at all, her musicality and harmonic creativity is so engaging. Her virtuosity, along with the ability and interest in playing other styles (Corey Wong, Bela Fleck, Grateful Dead, and her own band’s unique flavor). The first time I heard her live was at her premier of the Freshgrass Bluegrass Concerto… bluegrass, classical, and jazz elements (thanks Berklee School?) melded in my head perfectly. I camped in my car and then drove 3 hours to see her band the next night!! A joyful and inspiring sound for sure.

I've been noticing Sierra bending the strings in some of her solos lately (esp. when playing with Cory Wong's band). I wouldn't have thought much of it (beside how cool it sounds), except I recently heard in Norah Jones' interview with Chris Thile where he explained that he doesn't bend strings because it's really hard on a mandolin. So kudos for Sierra for pulling it off flawlessly!

It wasn't until Sierra Hull, AJ Lee, and a few other musicians played it that I saw and heard what a marvelous instrument the mandolin is. This was great.

Everybody that plays one of these older Gibsons gets this fantastic well-rounded tone. Some are being mic'd, some are using the bridge with the built-in pickup, some are using the Baggs Radius (I have one of those), but no matter what, there's always an unmistakable transient full sound that comes out of those Gibsons. I think Hull is playing an old F5? either way they're fantastic. I know she's used that expensive preamp, is it the "voiceprint" or something? hooked up w/the Radius pickup. I don't see that here, it looks like it's just being mic'd but again it doesn't seem to matter, these old Gibsons really project so well. I checked out an older f12. It was like over $4 or 5G. Nice indeed but I wasn't convinced enough, especially at these crazy prices. Maybe one has to play a few more in order to find that magic sound. mandolins too sound quite different in the room and to the listener than they "feel" when you're playing them. I guess I care more about what the instruments tone "feels" like when I'm playing. That's why I cant see playing with a back tone-guard. part of the allure of playing mandolin is the resonance of the tonal transference to the body from the back, especially on these that I play that have carved tops with solid backs and sides. I guess I might try a tone-guard and see if I like it. Most of these great sounds I hear come out of fantastic old instruments like F5's, I don't see the players using a tone-guard anyway. Chris Thile is one, Sam Bush, and Sierra Hull here, I don't see them using those. What's Thile using for a pickup? Anyone know? Anyway, Hull is awesome, everything she does, but I just love those old Gibsons. I'd freak over getting an F5 some day. Derr @me, I just noticed THERE IS a Baggs Radius pickup on there. That doesn't mean this wasn't mic'd or a combo of the mic and pickup weren't used for the sound we're hearing on the vid, but I'd be curious if she's using that preamp too. ~JSV

@@artisnotmoney Cool, I knew she had one of those but I wasn't sure which one was in this clip. I've seen her playing an older more vintage model, and there's some company like Collings or someone that made a custom one for her as well. For an F-style player I'm sure any one of us would love that Gibson Master model. I'd like to at least play one someday, but I have the feeling I'd be just as pleased with an older one or something that's had some years put on it and well broken-in. It seems there's a decent sized market for some nice older Gibsons under the $7K price. Sounds crazy, but you know what it's like when you get that really nice instrument in your hands, the feel, the tone, the response, very transient, it really makes you want to play even more. ~JSV

@@jsv438 Her Gibson was gone over by David Harvey and given the distressed treatment like the old Ricky Skaggs model. I think he did some re-carving too. I know she also played a Weber for a long time. There’s a few videos of her talking about her main mandolin and the Weber she used before that. They might be on her channel but I’m not sure.
