My mom raises them and has been for about 4 years now. Cut your milkweed plant and put it in something like a Gatorade bottle (or any kind of bottle) to keep the plant hydrated while they eat it. Cutting the leaves off will cause the plant to die too quick before they will eat it all. This is the method she's used all this time and it's worked out great! She raised about 35 of them from eggs last spring/summer season :)

My parents have been raising monarchs for a few years now, every summer they have all their mason jars with their little monarch babies. It's so fun and cool to watch the whole process day by day! Have fun! :)

So happy that you're helping Monarchs now too! They need every bit of help they can get. Just one tip to help you stay ahead of things - if there are as many eggs on your milkweed as you suspect, the caterpillars will eventually devour the leaves. You may want to scope out some additional sources of milkweed if you can, then you'll know where to go if you happen to need more. My husband and I each got the Sam’s club version of that chair in 2020. Keeping them outside most of the spring and all summer and fall until snow in WI they lasted until this year and we went and got new ones. We use them in the backyard and deck and take them camping. Sam’s club has a kids version too. I will set it up next to our hammock (we also got in 2020) and my daughter (who’s 10 now) will be in the hammock and want me to gently swing her and then I’ll be doing the same for myself in the hammock chair and it’s the most relaxing thing.

I loved this project as a kid!! Does the lid slide or flip open? I remember having a sliding lid and the chrysalis attach to the lid, so I was only able to open the slid so far before hitting the chrysalis. Maybe modify the lid so it can lifted.
