That looks like Caversham Bridge and I was born a mile from there and we swam in the river a little upstream. The HQ of the Thames Conservancy was in Reading just upstream from Reading Bridge and the successor disorganisation is based in more or less the same spot- Thames Water. I did work for the Thames Conservancy for a while by which time it was a division of Thames Water and found numerous bottles- most I gave away. Reading Corporation trolleybuses used to come up to the Caversham Bridge Hotel until 1965 - they turned around in the forecourt but that nice old building burned down and was replaced by a monstrosity. I think those lighters may have been designed also to hide the flame- not just from the wind but snipers. The famous writer Saki may have been killed by a sniper who spotted a cigarette in the darkness his supposed last words were "Put that bloody cigarette out!". His short story "Tobermory" about a talking cat is a wonderfully funny read . I could write so much about that area which is where I spent the happiest years of my life as a kid but I will quit now!

Thank you, this was so interesting to read. I’m a history addict. Always nice to hear of people who have lived through times when I wasnt even born . I adored listening to my grandparents while growing up. I asked them all sorts of questions from the past. Luckily they had all the time in the world and talked for hours about the war, old buildings that wasn’t around anymore family history and about the village I grew up in😃

Wow Si, yes I know that area very well. I was born just downstream where you were fishing and gre in on that stretch of the Thames. I remember going to Pipers Island, Salters steam Boats that ran from Caversham Bridge and The Bridge Hotel before the fire. It was a beautiful old building in traditional wooden features with very grand staircase and function rooms. There used to a victorian building next to the bridge which got turned into public toilets and later bought by someone who had it numbered and dismantled to be rebuilt somewhere abroad. There alot of history too on Frys Island with a battle taking place between DeMontfort and Lynmouth . I watched you on KZbin for a long time and can't believe you've been where I was born and lived. Amazing part of the Thames.

Those two customs & excise badges show how Queen Elizabeth chose a different crown to the one used by her father- George VI and the preceding kings after Victoria- her crown was on your sixpence which were called tanners when I was a kid .Charles has chosen a new crown. If you brush the loose rust off, then soak it in white vinegar for a while, it will dissolve the rest and do a great job on the inside as well. Like yourself, I really like those old finds.

Lovely video again Si. SMBC where I'm from is Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council. The Peakys would know where that is! I actually went to school with Marie, it was a bit of a shock seeing her on your channel as we lost contact a long time ago but I recognised her immediately.
