So, *some quick clarification*, the ending where you kill yang is considered the bad ending. To get the good ending, you'll have to spare all the bosses in their second phase. To do that, you wanna beat their first phase like normal (of course), then when you get to the second phase, you wanna break their structure *twice* without them running out of health. Once you break it the second time, there'll be an option on the gamepad for you to spare them. Something really important to not for sparing though is parrying, you'll wanna parry quite a bit since that affects boss structure.

For some lore for you about this games. Yang (the antagonist of the game) have lost his wife and child and so he tries to stole the pendent in order to revive them, but the sifu found out about it and banished Yang from the school because it is forbidden to be used for reasons unknown. That is what the two gravestones are there for in the cutscene after you killed Yang. Enraged for not being able to save his family because of the sifu, he plotted a revenge to kill him and the students of the school and steal the pendent for himself and his four subordinates. You, as the main character, the youngest son/daughter of the sifu, seek revenge on Yang and his 4 subordinates for killing your father. However, after you got your revenge, you got to see the backstory of why Yang wanted the pendent in the first place and feel guilty for it. So now, you are put back into the beginning to fight the 4 bosses and Yang but with an option of sparing them after you break their structure twice on their 2nd phase fight. Doing this will redeem yourself in a way by earning what is called "Wude" in the game, as well as giving you the true (and more satisfyingly) ending and the credits. *psst psst* There is a secret cutscene after the credits roll so don't skip it.

So for the lore: Yang was your dad's best student, which is why he taught you as well. Yang's wife and child were dying, and Yang wanted to steal the talisman (I believe) to keep them alive. Sifu kicked Yang out of the school after whooping his ass. That original fight you saw was Yang and other people that wanted your dad's group to use their powers to help the world. They killed them all, then tried to use the powers for good. It seems some of that got corrupted as they started dealing drugs n shit.

when you saw the 2 graves it was yours and Sifu's. you basically used the pendant to exact revenge after it brought you back to life from your throat being cut. Sifu kept it probably for that reason, among others. that warrants the bad ending for sure. Yang wanted to use it to heal everybody at the sanctuary, also his friends. Fujar had an ailment that made him a mute, Sean had a disfigured burnt face, Kuroki had serious mental problems (schizophrenia most likely) and Jinfeng was old and had 1 arm (also i think she was greedy). i guess Yang just wanted to help people and the game corrupts you into getting caught up in the tale of vengeance when Sifu was the real bad guy.

Kuroki didnt even want to fight you.

also remember Sifu exiled Yang, perhaps it was due to Yang's "discovery" that the artifact existed and what power it held. Yang never betrayed Sifu, it was the other way around. in the prologue Yang was doing the right thing but the game presented it like a mugging/slaughter to feed your appetite for vengeance.

I highly recommend trying to spare every boss: Which translates to taking them down via posture once (but don't finish them)wait for them to recover and then do it another time and press left on the D-Pad. Keep in mind that you automatically kill them if you best them via their vitality. You have to block and parry more often and get the according shrine rewards (middle rewards, the one on the right). If you solely rely on dodging... You're gonna kill them via vitality. It's also good to know that you can do this in any order. Though I recommend doing Yang last to get the "true ending" after sparing all of them once.

This spurred Yang to take the power of the talismans, form The Guardians(the bosses we defeat), and use their powers to help other people. That’s why they all have special powers. That’s my take

That last mission is probably one of the best story telling missions I've ever done....let me explain. This game is all about showing the audience rather than telling. The game is very subtle about it's story and it leaves the audience to kinda piece together the more indirect lore aspect. That being said the last mission was the most direct story telling in the game. The game is outright telling u that what u chose was not right and there is more to it then that. The main character feels empty and regretful and the ending makes the player feel the same way. Ultimately urging and encouraging you to take the more difficult path and chose to spare the bosses. Absolutely phenomenal ending

Basically Yang wanted to take the pendant to save his dying wife and daughter, but sifu wouldn’t allow it, so when Yangs family died, he killed sifu in revenge. More Sifu lore on the characters; (already posted this under another comment but this will be out here for the rest to find and read) Edit - Sifu is actually a title for a skillful person or Master, but for lack of an actual name will be used to refer to the MC. The CEO(Jinfeng) was the mastermind behind it all, the attack on the group called the guardians (head 4 martial art schools) who protected each a talismans of power, Jinfeng(CEO), Sean's (fighter) father and Sifus' father were all part of this group. There were 5 talismans each representative of the "Wu De" or martial arts ethics; There are five points in Wu De: Respect, Humility, Trust, Virtue, and Honor. In her lust for power CEO incited a coup against the guardians using 2 school's finest student and 2 outsiders, taking advantage of the poor relationships said students had with their masters Yang(Leader) - a senior in Sifus' father martial art school, tried to save the life of his dying ill wife and daughter with the "pendant"(or the healing talisman itself not too sure) but Sifus' father found out beat and expelled him, therefore leading to the death of said wife and daughter whose grave you can see after you kill Yang. Jinfeng probably promised Yang the talisman which grants "healing" in exchange for killing his master, so no one will have to go through the same loss he did. Sean(Fighter) - it is unclear how or why Sean's father died but Sean continued to seek, fight and train strong warriors. Probably got swayed by the promise of unparalleled strength.(surely why he is the strongest in the game after Yang) Kuroki(Artist) - one of the outsider, was born to a family of Japanese assassins/Ninja, she also had a twin sister which she was tricked into killing by her father. Maddened by sadness, grief and remorse she developed a 2nd personality representative of her dead sister, she helped Jinfeng take down the guardians in exchange for Jinfeng's help in taking down her ninja family. Hence why she tells protagonist revenge won't satisfy him/her. Fajar(Botanist) - mute, outcast and suffering from severe mental trauma grew up in the slums and is the only whom Yang seemed to have grown quite close to through their patient-doctor relationship, since they are the only bosses known to visit each other. Fajar surely convinced by Jinfeng with the promise of family, fortune and most importantly purpose. Jinfeng also used his botanist skills to create a drug plant which will help her enterprise grow and through which she will use the money to sponsor Yang's and Kuroki's respective enterprises. Jinfeng (CEO) - grew up poor in a war torn country where she lost her right arm and had nothing but her will, wits and lust for power as drive to bring her where she is now. Her intents and how she joined the guardians is not very clear, but she has been shown to care for other war torn countries, poor nations, orphans etc through her charity acts, and is shown willing to do whatever is necessary for what she believes will bring forth the greater good no matter the cost or sacrifice needed. In the end Jinfeng was the true boss to defeat and ironically enough, the easiest. Uncovering all this in game was a real journey. Thanks Sloclap.

My understanding of the lore is this: There used to be 5 guardians that each guarded a talisman regarding a certain element. Yang was being trained by Sifu to take over as the guardian of the life talisman, but wanted to use the power to save his wife and child. He tried to take it and was cast out. After his family died, he sought revenge. The CEO was one of the original guardians and helped the group betray the other 4 Guardians and steal their talismans. The last of which being Sifu. The talismans are as follows: Botanist= Plant Fighter= Fire Artist= Water CEO= Earth Leader= Life After killing everyone, you are tasked with achieving "Wude" or "Martial Morality". This is basically having the ability to fuck everyone up, but the grace to spare them your wrath.

Some corrections. Jinfeng is not earth element, she is metal. Jin is literally gold in Chinese. Thats why shining gold is all over her stage and her weapon. She became as rich as she is because of her gold power. Yang isnt life, he is earth. He doesnt use its earth powers to fight but he does use its healing abilities. In Chinese myth, humans were molded from earth and thats why earth talisman heals.

So everybody's saying the main character was the bad guy all along and Yang was justified for stealing the pendant to save his wife and daughter. The thing is, the pendant Yang stole had incredible power, but also would corrupt the wielder (as per the board). Each of the bosses had something that gave them powers as well, which is why they're able to manipulate their environment in their second phase. They similarly stole those from the previous guardians. Fajar had the element of wood, hence his ability to grow plants and change the environment to a bamboo forest. Sean had the element of fire, hence his scarring and his ability to instantly change the room to one that's being scorched. Kuroki, water, hence her ability to make snow indoors and also change the environment to a raging storm on the sea. CEO had metal, reflected by her use of the bell to teleport. And Yang robbed old Sifu of earth, which is why his clinic has miracle cures. Unfortunately, we see the problems with Yang's sanctuary pretty clearly. Everybody there is batshit insane, speaking calmly while trying to break your spine. So yeah, Sifu isn't wrong for going after the bosses. Sifu is wrong for doing so for the wrong reason (revenge). He is absolutely right for going after them to retrieve the talismans and hopefully set them on the right path again. The only way to retrieve the talismans is to defeat each boss while demonstrating Wude. Killing them defeats them physically. Sparing them, while harder, defeats them spiritually and demonstrates morals along with power. Only then can you retrieve their talismans.
