+Vickers Tactical The plate to "limit" the gun to semi (2:40) only exists because in switzerland people take ther military guns home once they've finished the military service and must not use full auto outside of military training context (you can't buy any full auto rifle as a civilian, that's why civilian versions of sig 550s are in semi auto only). It's mostly "trust" based, in pure swiss fashion.
@jean-michelnicolas99999 жыл бұрын
+Anusideral A Swiss guy explained to me that this plate was designed to prevent "full auto accidents" at the range. You're supposed to keep it that way at all time unless you're in a place that allow for full auto.
@Anusideral9 жыл бұрын
***** Well I'm simplifying a bit. According to the swiss law you can't even "use" a full auto weapon. That's why there are no places that allow full auto. When using those plates, ordonnance weapons are legally "turned into semi auto weapons". So if you remove that plate, you're illegally turning a semi-auto weapon into a full auto weapon, which like you can imagine, has consquences. So when you use it with the plate on, you're not "using" a full auto weapon, but a semi auto one. Please note that it only concerns ordonnance weapons given to swiss citizens doing the military service., as any other full auto weapons "effectively" (compared to the plate thing) turned into semi auto weapons are also illegal to, buy, own and use. Also, this is the current state of the law, it might have been different some years ago but I wasn't living here back then and I don't really have the time to dig into the obsolete laws records, sorry. Edit: further reading the law, seems that the Cantons (swiss "states") can deliver exceptional authorizations for full auto weapons under very specific conditions. Key word here : "exceptional". :D

I didn't know about that "design flaw", nice to know ;) Beeing Swiss I used to be issued a Sig 550 , a very reliable and easy to use rifle, but a bit heavy on the downside (Due to my rank I'm nowadays issued with a Sig P220 Pistol) I had to laugh a bit when Larry explained how to use the safety-switch (thumb/index-finger), because that's exactly what I was trained to do ! XD Regarding the small plate that can be used to limmit the fire-selector to semi-auto only: This has to do with practices within a shooting-range in Switzerland. When entering, every Rifle has to be pre-set to fire semi-auto only, to prevent accidental full-auto fire. So by flipping-down the little plate, you'll conveniantely limmit the rifle's select-fire capability. Sorry for the long text ;) I'm curious what Larry thinks of the standard variant (550)...

+Wacky WEASEL I kinda like the switch that limits the fire selector to semi only. I've noticed, especially with H&K guns, like the MP5 or the UMP45, the selector takes quite a bit more force to get it to switch than a AR/M4/M16 type selector, and I've found myself trying to go from safe to semi, or even safe/semi to burst, and find I had to push the selector so hard that once it does move, I've skipped over both semi and burst and went straight to auto, lol. A little inconvenient on the range, but I bet that would be a little more than inconvenient when your getting shot at or kicking down doors. Still though, that MP5 is a dream to shoot otherwise.
@DaveSmith-cp5kj9 жыл бұрын
+Joe Blow I like M16/M4 style selector better for that reason 90 degree angles for selector so you will never accidentally overshoot your fire settings. Automatic is a really niche setting to begin with, so if I used the 550 series I probably would just leave the rifle on semi auto only anyways.

The switch for semi-auto to selective comes from the Swiss armed forces. While we have our guns on selective fire on CQB-shooting ranges, we have to switch to semi-automatic on 300m ranges. This is the only use for that switch.. It's not for rendering full auto unusable longterm, but just for one single task "300m shooting".

Nice vid as usual! The plate for the selector (to make it semi only) is a thing used by the military. When we do our annual target practice, you have to set it to the semi only setting before entering the range. They check (little white dot appears) at the entrance. This way they can be sure none of the guns fire more than semi in the range. Of course you can just open the gun and switch it, but there are RSOs all around who watch the shooters.

For sure the 553 with it's recoil spring captured around the piston is really easier to disassemble and more reliable. What surprised me the first time I disassembled mine, is that with it's particularly design when you separate the upper from the lower you can still operate the charging handle and the bolt will return on battery like if the weapon was still assembled. Kind of unusual to not have the recoil spring located behind the bolt. I also prefer the 553 charging handle design vs the 552 one because with it's polymer part it's a bit more comfortable while shorter.On mine I have the Rotex flash hider option which looks cooler than the standard one. Greetings from France guys, and thanks Larry for all those great videos.

You can get the 553 in the U.S. now as a pistol, which is improved over the 552 in many ways. The 553 is genuine SAN 100% Swiss made, so it's expensive, but given what the pre-ban Sig's go for it's actually 1/3 or less for a new 553. You can SBR it but then you have to replace enough parts with American ones for 922 compliance. I own a couple of Sig 556's and agree, they don't compare in workmanship, fit, finish, accuracy, etc., when you compare it to the 553. The 553 is actually capable of 2MOA accuracy with the right shooter, not me, but that's pretty good for 9" barrel!

We ran these with teams in Iraq for several years and they were quite handy. Only real gripe was with the base of the gas pistons where they mated with the bolt carrier. We got a batch where the pistons had not been heat treated correctly and over time they would deform gradually forming a ramp that eventually caused the piston to ride up over the back of the bolt carrier and split the top of the carrier. Absolutely no service from the SIG company either, which was disappointing. Good shooting gun with a forward grip and EOTech sight.

Hi Vickers! Guy living in switzerland here. That little plate that pivots around to disable the 3-shot butst and full auto mode is there for the following reason: After serving your military time and you've proven competent enough to handle your gun, you're allowed to take your gun home without actually having to have a license to carry. In this case, they only allow you to have access to the semi-auto mode on your gun. To ensure this, that little plate gets fixed mechanically so you can't turn it back anymore, thus permanently disabeling full auto and burst mode. With the right tools you can still enable those modes, but that's illegal.
@juliesmith69118 жыл бұрын
+Chretze If you were in the military and proved you could handle it why would they not trust you with auto or burst? And since it can easily be flipped back what is the point if someone was to commit a crime with his rifle he could easily move the plate back prior to said criminal act.
@Chretze8 жыл бұрын
Julie Smith Don't ask me, it's the law here. Civilians just aren't allowed to have full auto or burst mode. I you modify your rifle to be fully functional again you risk a jail sentence if you get caught. It's not that simple to do either, you need some gunsmithing skills and tools to do it. At are range we rent that gun 552 commando. One problem we ran in to the gas is not one piece. It is 2 tubes over time they come apart. the front part over the gas block is not held in place from moving forward. Only the end of the tube locks in to the receiver. if the two pieces of the tube brake the front one will almost fly out the front. Also the front on the gas tube is weak. it will want to crack on the inside were the gas regulater locks in.

The rear tritium night sights are for close range targets which you'd shoot without really aiming, e.g. in CQB. You make sure that the front dot and the rear dots are approximately in line and do a double tap. At least that's what we trained in the Armed Forces before we had rifles with reflex optics. If you want to shoot longer ranges with the night sight, you rotate to the "4" rear diopter sight and you're good to go.
@sgtgs427 жыл бұрын
Just as a quick note. The plate that blocks the gun to semi only is because of a rule that at the 300m ranges, in Switzerland, we cannot have the gun on 3-shot burst nor full auto. The white dot that signifies that it is blocked to semi-only is just something that "needs to be visible" when we enter the 300m ranges. IDK, it's a stupid rule, but if you ever serve in the Swiss army, you'll realize that there are a LOT of supid rules lol.

The switch between semi-automatic and full-auto is for the civilian use in switzerland. every swiss man needs to serve in the armed forces and get's they're gun to home, so they could fight they're way to the next pick up point. but the "veterans" or reservist, or however you want to call them, need to practice shooting every year in a civilian shooting range, and as a civilian in switzerland your not allowed to have a fulll-auto gun. the switch is built like that, so that the soldiers get in a war scenario, even if switzerland is invaded, to they're meeting point where they are going to receive the rest of they're equipment. Also important to know: only special forces operators get the SIG 552 or SIG 553 from the armed forces, common soldiers get the SIG 550. The sof of the miliairy police of the swiss armed forces have a bigger arsenal and are also using guns like the mp 5 and so, but they need to leave them at the barracks, just like the maching guns and the Sniper rifles. The block for full auto is in the design due to Swiss military laws. Recruits get their rifle in the first week. It's our personal weapon we get to keep and take home. Now, during training normal recruits are required to keep their rifles locked to semi auto. Normal infantry soldiers probably will never train on full auto. If i recall correctly you need officers school and the rank of minimum an officer to be allowed to shoot full auto. May sound strange that normal infantry is not allowed to train on full auto but we are a small defensive army.

isn't the semi-only switch primarily used for locking the gun in semi mode after one has completed his service in the swiss army? I know my dad has got the predecessor of the SG550 and they weld a piece of metal in there so you're not able to switch to auto
@TheJoel38039 жыл бұрын
the full-auto lock is just required if you go to civilian shooting ranges where if you were to shoot faster than semi-auto you would brake the target computers

This flap for the selector, is to ensure when shooting at the long distant range (oblagatory shootings and feldschiessen etc. (300m/900ft) with the 550 army version) to ensure not accidently switching the selector to 3-burst or 20-burst… Polyteonic would not be happy :))

Vickers tactical. Mate this gun made so many FPS gun games fun. I’d love to visit USA and give it a go for real in a rifle range. In MW19 it has low recoil and the 1st choice of go to guns for pretty much everyone.

The "white point" is used for gun ranches (no full auto allowed, with the lock for auto fire in, there are no accidents) and for guard duty (Swiss Military regulations dictate that you're only allowed to shoot shot after shot on guard)

the plate is for military use... while 300m shooting on the range with the 550 you dont want a soldier who accidently puts it on burst. also while you have the gun at home and take it to the range as civilian your not allowed to take the plate out of the way, you could easily but its a punishable act. for example if you in the US have an ar15 pistol with an armbrace you could shoulder it without a problem but your not allowed to unless you have the paperwork for an sbr.

Great video from Vickers Tactics as usual :), I really hope to see the SIG 556 variant, it's one of my favorite rifles. Unfortunately I can't have access to Vickers Tactics Facebook page :'( , this appears on FB when I click on the link in the description "The link you followed may have expired, or the Facebook Page may only be visible to an audience you're not in"

Main reason why the gun is so heavy: the barrel is made from hardened steel. That's why you can clean it with a steel brush, where in other guns with a steel brush you would destroy the barrel.

Does the Swiss arms still uses the 553 or they now use the B&T APC, or a mix between the two

I love the sig 550 series sight because you dont need any tools to zero. Now i've only shoot semi automatic because it is not allowed to shot full auto in the shooting range but we had full auto sig 550s in our youth shoot cours. Now i dont know if it is the only reason for this plate but we use it to block the full auto and semi auto here in switzerland when we go to a shooting range because they control you at the entrance

+Kappi1997 I don't quite understand why they care if you shoot it on auto at the range? Why does it matter if you practice controlling your weapon's recoil on full auto? To get the hang of it you need to shoot it on auto a lot.
@Kappi19978 жыл бұрын
+Julie Smith Because only the military is allowed to use full auto guns here in switzerland. Our shooting club rents them from the army so they have a full automode but we aren't allowed to use it. After you have done your service in the army you can take the gun home but they will take out the parts which are needed to shoot full automatic. I think the reason why full auto is forbidden is because the aim of the shooting club is to learn to shoot accurate.
