River Man, Time has told me, Fruit Tree, Saturday Sun. Can’t miss with any of these Nick Drake songs. Northern Sky is a rare happy song from him. Most of his songs are complex and melancholy but I adore him…RIP

The term 'songwriting genius' is often misused, but in NIck Drake's case it is entirely appropriate.

Agreed. This term comes to mind when I listen to him and also Van Morrison.

I discovered Nick Drake through Pandora, of all places, and he immediately became one of my favorite artists. He is known for his intricate guitar playing, and I've read he had unusually large hands enabling him to play in a unique style. His personal story is also intriguing, as he had little success during his lifetime but has grown exponentially in acclaim over time.

Nick started out playing the sax before he played the guitar. You can tell in his vocal style, he sings like he is playing the sax. One of my very favourite artists!

Bought the Bryter Later album in Cambridge back in 1972 - have loved him for more than 50 years!! Reminds me of late night study, with a glass of something nice, and Nick Drake on the turntable helping me through.

One of my top all time songs, Nick Drake was a English singer songwriter, amazingly talented. Only made three studio albums and sadly took his own life at the age of 26 in 1974 👍

Drake was one of the greatest folk singer songwriters of all time. He's British and unfortunately died in his 20's as he suffered from depression. I believe he only made 3 albums that are all fantastic. He never had much commercial success but was very influential and highly regarded by other artists.

I was first introduced to Nick Drake back in 1994 in Tulsa, Oklahoma of all places. The local NPR station had a show on Sunday nights called "The Folk Sampler-from the foothills of the Ozarks, with Mike Flynn" He played the song "Time Has Told Me" as the theme of that week's show was "Time". I was instantly hooked and went out to my local Barnes and Noble and found a CD of Nick Drake- Bryter Later. Next thing I know his songs are showing up on movie soundtracks. I might have never known had I not been listening to NPR. This song is my favorite. There are amazing short videos on You Tube about him and his life and the artists who worked with him, like the legendary Richard Thompson. Gone too soon, indeed.

I've loved this song for years and years, but it was only recently that I found out that John Cale was involved in the arrangements. It made even more sense of why I like it so much!

My wife bought me a boxset of four CDs, that includes his only three released albums and a compilation of some unreleased tracks. I am amazed by how often I have heard snippets of his songs on documentaries, films, TV programmes and adverts. A few years ago there was a concert dedicated to Nick Drake with various musicians each playing one of his songs, which is amazing when you consider how long ago he died, how little success he had, but the small number of his songs are so well loved that people still want to perform them.

This is the first Nick Drake song I ever heard. It was on an Island Records sampler record called El Pea (geddit?) and it turned out to be my entry into the rabbit hole. Sadly he was gone too soon.

A wonderful selection by your patreon. A tortured soul toward the end of his life, Nick Drake was a well-respected artist. One of your commenters mentioned John Martyn, who wrote a song about Nick Drake which is haunting, The song is "Solid Air". If you are not familiar with John Martyn, you really should acquaint yourself. Talk about a rake. But he had a fantastic collection of tunes and was a very innovative guitarist.

Yes, good voice there... Hi guys! :) Nick Drake was one of the UK's "lost kids", a great "might have been famous". He has 3 LPs of heart searching, wrenching music (Black Eyed Dog) focussing on melancoly and depression. Likely commited suicide after a lot of A++ work ignored / sales tanked. Another sad Robert Wyatt (Sea Song) type profile, except... no direct tragedy; just didn't match up with what the world wanted so he was left adrift. Hats off to you Nick, wherever you are - you changed many peoples lives, did you but know it PS just take a look at the comments... kzbin.info/www/bejne/hpLFqZuBidB4Zrc

I was 21 in 1972 and heard Cello Song and that was my introduction to Nick Drake. I immediately went out and bought the album along with Pink Moon and a few years after Bryter Later. My oldest son is a huge fan now. Sad ending to an iconic romantic musical poet.

An outstanding songwriter, singer and guitarist, tragically cut short at 26 after just three exquisite albums (accidental overdose of antidepressants). Under appreciated in his lifetime. A genius lyricist and musician.

Check out 5 LEAVES LEFT by Nick Drake - his finest album. I was working at the Sheffield Crucible Theatre and dropped in to a nearby pub and was waiting for an old friend and Nick Drake came on the sound. Next to me was a guy who made some positive comments about the music - I told him that I was lucky enough to see Nick as a support act - painfully shy and looking at his feet throughout. He told me he was a huge fan. My friend arrived and turns out the guy was Richard Hawley! No mean songwriter himself. On 5 LEAVES LEFT there are some amazing orchestral arrangements and the depth of the writing is stunning. His sister is actress Gabrielle Drake. Nick was English.

It was in 'Something about Mary' by far his most upbeat album but my favourite album just like Captain Beefheart's 'Blue Jeans and Moonbeams', The Doors's 'Soft Parade' or the Velvet Underground's 'Loaded'. When outcastes try to make commercial pop it always fails wonderfully.

It's magic crazy how the beginning of "Northern Sky," "Melissa" by the Allman Brothers (kzbin.info/www/bejne/bWLbp6qMhqZ1rNksi=SIfyTNTnhgebTcFJ), "Make It With You" by Bread (kzbin.info/www/bejne/habHemWAhc14p7Msi=0Uw3hwWzKf2mQRg6), and "Watch Me" by Labi Siffre (kzbin.info/www/bejne/g4LJe3eHrcido8ksi=qvZPxjBeUJJbhtg1) all have similar beginnings.

The piano was played by John Cale who was in The Velvet Underground. This is the only Nick Drake song I can attempt to play on guitar, it is one of the few in which he does not use weird tuning. Drake was a beautiful genius. Check out Josh Turner playing some of his songs.
@johncranna9427
@johncranna9427 5 ай бұрын
Actually it seems as if, according to many other musicians that it was played in a tuning very unique to Nick Drake namely BEBEBE! It can played in standard tuning but he certainly used his own and it was made nagjcam by the piano, organ and celeste of John Cale.
