I've seen the Aristocrats 5 times, Guthrie a further twice, one with Zappa plays Zappa and once with Steven Wilson, where Marco was on Drums. They all love Zappa. Bryan and Marco were part of ex Zappa Guitarist Mike Keneally's band as well as Joe Satriani's band, along with Mike. They are all brilliant. Guthrie is like the Zappa of guitar for me. He's self taught and never had a lesson in his life and like Frank, knows no limit's on the guitar, unlike those technical but soulless guitarists that come off the production lines of places like Berkley. There's not one ounce of self ego in any of them. I love how the play such complicated music while at the same time, are having fun, even playful. Guthrie for me is the G.O.A.T. The likes of Vai he left in his slipstream years ago. Unlike Vai and others, he doesn't try and f""" himself on his solo's and pose, which I like. Marco is at the top of the tree too. He was just warming up on this. Some of his work is amazing. Move over Bozzio, you're history! Bryan is so versitile. Can do the Death metal type bass, Was in a band called Dethlok, well, he can do anything bass wise. So glad you reacted how you did, cheers. Not bad for a set opener just to get warmed up either, is it!lol.

@@SightAfterDark . Pleasure. As for how do you find these bands? Might be the "snob" in me but I think the better the bands you follow, the more likely you are to find them. The Waldfe sums this one up quite well, without having to repeat.

I didn’t see your comment first . Mine was how Zapperesque they are and Frank would play with them and love them. You’re lucky! I saw Zappa plays Zappa here at The Paramount on Long Island Pre Covid. I’m hoping the Aristocrats play

Each of them a master of his instrument. Each one a class of its own. A fusion trio on this level there is no other in the last 20 years. you have to go back to the 1970th.

Not only do their names alliterate, but it matches their instruments: Guthrie Govan on Guitar; Bryan Beller on Bass; and Marco Minnemann on Mrums. I imagine most who've heard about this band have because all three guys have played with some of the best and biggest names in music. Also, their band name comes from a classic vaudevillian vulgar joke (Gilbert Gottfried did a famous rendition of it), and it fits the band's humor.

Guthrie Govan is one of my favorite guitarists. Also a favorite of Steve Vai and Joe Satriani among others. Marco and Bryan, who had played together in Mike Keneally's band, were supposed to play a gig with guitarist Greg Howe at a Namm show, but Howe got sick, and they called Guthrie to fill in at the last minute. They had immediate musical rapport and the rest is history. Also see their live DVD "Boing, We'll Do It Live" - especially Marco Minnemann's drum solo on "Blues F**kers", and Guthrie on fretless guitar.

They are all Big Zappa fans. Guthry was jammin with Dweezil at one off his shows. Dweezil is a big fan of Guthry. Marco played in the band UKz With John Wetton ex King Crimson Eddie Jobson ex Zappa and Jethro Tull. UK original line up where John Wetton , Bill Bruford ,Allan Holdsworth and Eddie Jobson. Terry Bozzio tok over from Bill Bruford.

By the way: "The Aristocrats" is the name of a - pretty slippery - sketch from the Vaudeville Shows about one hundred years ago. Wikipedia can tell you what it's all about, and be shure to have a parental advice in mind.😁

I know of these guys by way of Mike Keneally. I first became aware of MK in 1989 when I saw an ad for his band, Drop Control at a local club in San Diego. The ad referred to him as “ex Frank Zappa guitarist”. That’s all I needed to see. I’ve been following him since then and have seen him countless times. Bryan has played with Mike since the early 90s. He was in the MK band you reacted to for the song Kedgeree which was recorded at the Baked Potato in Studio City (LA). That evening featured the same five musicians in two sets. One as the Mike Keneally Band and before that they opened as the Bryan Beller Band. Other musicians that night were Rick Musallam on guitar and vocals, Griff Peters on guitar and Joe Travers on drums. Those five performed in what they called “The Same Band Tour”. Joe is aka the Vaultmeister for the Zappa Family Trust and has toured with Dweezil in early Zappa Plays Zappa shows. Dweezil, his brother Ahmet, Mike, Joe and Bryan were in the band “Z” in the ‘90s. Currently Mike, Joe, Jamie Kime on guitar and vocals, Ray White (guitar & vocals), Robert Martin* (vocals, keys and sax), Scott Thunes (bass & vocals) are touring as The Zappa Band. Mike, Ray, Robert and Scott were all in Frank’s ‘88 band for the Broadway the Hard Way tour. So, to answer your question, “How do you find out about these guys?”, the answer is to have been into Zappa since the ‘60s and follow the tree. *- About Robert, he’s the one about whom you asked, “Who the fuck is this guy?!” during a Zappa reaction. I learned in the early ‘70s that you won’t find out about such musicians by listening to the radio because these people make art, not merchandise. Once you tap that musical vein, you’re on a slippery slope into a wonderful and vast rabbit hole.

I saw them live in Zürich 4 or 5 years ago in a small venue. I went in cold, the same as you. In fact, I almost didn't get in. At the door, they scanned the QR code on my ticket, and apparently I had a duplicate. I remained calm, and the nice lady said eventually "your accent just got you in". I'm glad I got in.

Where you find these bands? Well, just follow the white rabbit into the rabbit hole of sophisticated music. E.g. Mike Keneally played with Frank Zappa with Scott Thunes, for Zappa's Universe Mike and Scott played with Morgan Ågren and Mats Morgan, Mike and Scott and Joe Travers played with Dweezil Zappa, Scott was the replaced by Bryan Beller, Joe and Bryan played with Mike Keneally & Beer for Dolphins, Keneally with Steve Vai and Joe Satriani, Marco Minnemann and Bryan played with Mike as KMB, and later formed the backing band for Joe Satriani, later Marco left and Joe replaced him, then Mike left and Rai Whatsthename from Knower replaced him on Keyboards , Mike also created an album with Andy Partridge from XTC, Minnemann and Beller founded the Aristocrats with Guthrie Govan, Guthrie and Minnemann played with Steven Wilson, Keneally recorded vocals for a Panzerballett track and recorded and toured with Devin Townsend, Panzerballett have also featured Marco on drums and Matthias IA Eklundh on guitar and vocals, who has also worked with Mats & Morgan.... and I'm just getting started, not even touched on the more jazzy side of things 😂 Looks like most amazing musicians are very well connected.

“Hi, Guffrie here”, in a great English accent, is what I remember years ago teaching students and using Guitar Techniques magazine. Govan used to write for them and do lessens, transcriptions etc..Hilarious. I Knew nothing of this band until only about three years ago during lock down and then I realised, hey, that’s that guy from Guitar Techniques! I had ignored Govan for years. People kept mentioning him, until I finally checked him out and was amazed. Thinks like jazz cat too when he blows. Don’t swing like one, but who cares. Genuine improviser on changes. Always hangs round melody. I knew of Brian Beller from playing with Mike Keneally. Duo versions of Inca Roads are fantastic and hilarious. And they fucking have fun when they play.
