On a trip through the GDR in 1961, an SFB team also visits Jena, the big city in Thuringia on the Saale. A tour of the city takes the reporters from the Johannistor with the Powder Tower to Schiller University and the Gothic Town Hall, one of the few historic buildings to have survived the hail of bombs during the Second World War. Visitors from the West always comment sceptically on the ideology in the East. In particular, the expropriation of the Zeiss factories and their transformation into a state-owned enterprise or the limited supply of goods in the workers' and peasants' state are met with criticism. In the commentaries on the Jena cityscape, it quickly becomes clear that the Cold War is also being pursued in the media. Jena is portrayed as a former city of world fame, which is now losing its importance under socialism.
